**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

That's really great. My wife wanted to mount mine, but I said no and put them in a box to give to my Son when he is old enough to appreciate what they mean.

I would love to have my Grandfathers medals, especially my Mums grandfather who was a codetalker in WWII, however no one knows what happened to his possessions when he died, which was before I was born.

If you have his service number you can enquire with the veterans agency to see if you can get his medals. Even without it I'm sure they may help.

Yeah I'm gonna lose a month at least it seems.

Since joining the raf I've been delayed at least 6 months of career progression. When I passed out of Halton there was a 4 month wait before my next phase of training due to over recruiting without pre planning properly. Then my supposed 18 months at my first post became 20 months due again to fitting people into courses.

Overall the delays cost thousands in lost pay really. Just gotta grin and bare it.

I think I've stacked over 6months of just sitting and waiting for my career to just start, then my report date fell at a time that meant I did the longest stretch possible where as some people only had to wait 6 months before receiving their 1st report. Just have to suck it up I'm afraid.

Ive turned up to unit at the wrong time I guess in terms of career stalling.

Regiment went to afghan march, I turned up April, so the good news is Im been put on guard, doubt the place won't be in full swing till the lads come back and then after they all have leave and stuff...

Tried getting on courses and that to not look like a s* c* when they get back but what can you do, tell the staffy to do one when they put you on guard.

Visiting a Royal Navy careers office tomorrow.

I've been really trying hard to get a role in the nuclear industry, but I've decided to look at the nuclear options through the sub route.

Let's see where this leads :)

edit; Just starting the 8 week navy fitness programme. First up, 15-20 minute run, but to be fair I'll just jump in with the 2.4km run and see where I get.

I know the run isn't difficult, but I just ran 2.4km in 10minutes. (as well as some cycling and more running) I need to do it comfortably now though.

Tomorrow is swimming.

Do we have many TA guys or reservists on here? Been looking into it a bit recently and would be interested in getting opinions

Started the ball rolling today. Looking at Warfare Officer (Submariner).

Surely if you want to get into the Nuclear industry you would be much better off becoming a Marine Engineering Officer onboard a submarine? Or even just a Marine Engineer rating?

The AB(ME)s do qualifications and when they become Leading Hand I believe they start to get nuclear trained? This obviously makes them more appealing for hire to a Nuclear related company. You will not get any of this by becoming a Warfare Officer.

I am not a submariner myself, but 3 of the lads I work with are, so I know a bit on the matter.

I did think about going in as a rating. Like you say, Marine Engineering Officer would be good but I'm not qualified/accredited.

I've got some thinking to do over the next week or two before I send off my decision.

If you've seen my earlier posts I was training hard to join the TA with 131 Squadron Royal Engineers until I bust my ankle twice, now I'm sure we have some PTIs here or at least very fit people quick question:
This has been deferred until Nov, I'm now starting to run again and have entered the 10km Commando Challenge: http://www.commandochallenge.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5:10k-marine-challenge&catid=3

This will require me to run in boots, which will also help my ankles, should I add runs in with regularly or just break them in and run with them on the day?
Hopefully it means my body can run and then I can try for joining up again before I'm too old. Although I will have to wear combats or similar cos boots and shorts would look really very stupid!

What boots will you be running in?

Issued boots will absolutely annihilate your feet no matter what you do.

Your best bet with any boots is to break them in for about a month by just going on walks gradually increasing in distance before even thinking about running.

Magnums will be a lot more forgiving on your feet but you won't be able to wear them when you actually do your recruit training.

I'd say walk in them as much as you can for a week or two and then start running in them, obviously start off running short distances and build your way up to 10k.
