**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

Im not that self conscious I just think they look really lame and would take the **** outa someone else in them so would rather avoid the normal speedo style.

You'll most likely have swimming lessons in Phase 1 in which you'll need to have trunks, not shorts. They look somewhat lame, but you won't stand out, as everyone else will be wearing them as well.

I don't know if it is 100% suitable as it has a few modes to go through to get to red LED but the alpkit gamma kicks out a lot of light for its price, I use mine lots out on the hills.

Ok cheers. Any recommendations for head torch?

I'd suggest a Petzl E-Lite or the Silva Ranger. On both the first light to come on is red, so you're not banging white light out. Saves your night vision, and stops more beastings.

I had the Alpkit Gamma on basics, the only downside is keeping it covered until the red LED comes on, although the green light is a bonus for First Aid and Map Reading at night (seeing blood/contour lines).

Hello girls and guys (you're mainly girls though ofc),

I'm off to warmer climates again at the end of this year, another Xmas away from home. I wouldn't normally be phased but this last year has been a heavy one for me. We lost my mother to cancer back in 2011 and then this year I lost my younger brother in a horrific explosion/fire at work. All that on top of several other issues and I've been on edge to say the least. My boss and unit have been great giving me compassionate leave, I've had around 3 weeks in total including inquests, funeral, grieving etc. I've had about 4 weeks holiday and after checking my JPA I still have around 20 days leave some how!! So I certainly can't complain about time off in the forces but we all know it comes back around when you're away at the worst time of year. My brothers and mothers birthdays were at Xmas time too. Perhaps this tour I can put everything behind me now and move on.

Anyway, enough of this bloody whining. My real reason for posting: I've posted this in the hardware section but wondered if anyone here could help. I'm looking for a new laptop/netbook for my deployment. What do you guys use? I was looking at a netbook but in my experience they're agonisingly slow and tablets I fear I would break the screen easily.

I want:
Webcam, WiFi, Keyboard, Ruggedness, WiFi, Movie player, Basic games play (e.g. football manager,Civ 5), Small - to slide in my bergen/pocket.... W.H.Y??

I take my ACER with me, always works fine. Not been to Afghan (yet) mind.

Still got 58days leave to take and a crap load of course. Love Cosford!

I'm just back from KAF, took a 15" MBPro and an iPad. A Kindle was superb as well, but it wouldn't work with the Welcome Wifi.

I took my 13" MBP and it worked fine, survived a 3 foot drop onto a plug, nice dent in the back now :p. But yeah, Any small (Around 13") laptop is fine I'd say, it fits into your day sack easy enough, doesn't weigh much, but has the extra power. I wouldn't bother with a netbook because, as you say, they're a bit slow for what I like doing, and I've got a lot of HD content which I took out with me, so I needed the extra bit of power.. Oh and also running VM's because I was getting bored out there with the fact we can't actually touch much server stuff!

Sorry to hear that mate.

I start army phase 1 on monday. Any last min tips?

It'll be somewhat like school, you may not like it loads while you're there, but you'll look back and think it was pretty good. Just remember, all the way though training, you're not in the real army till you are posted to your first unit, that's when you can start enjoying yourself more.

Like me for example, I'm back in work on Monday. I've been off since the 13th.. of June.. :D.

What you joining?

Good luck, as others have said it's a bit like school :)

Go there with an open mind and be able to laugh at yourself. Don't take any punishment personally and enjoy it!

I loved basic.

There are really crappy times but everyone is in it together and you can laugh about it afterwards

Well, you would assume so, but I'm so retarded with such things lately, I literally need someone a little bit more savvy than me to hold my hand and say "this one you doofus".

I took a laptop to Afg in the past, dropped it and borked the HDD, so SSD would be nice as well as prolonged battery life. Might have to nip to the highstreet and have a "play" in the shops.
