**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

I reckon if you want something with good build quality you would be looking at around 600-700+

I paid around 450 for mine and you can tell, its a bit flimsy, had it over a year now though.

Doesnt last in the blocks.

I'm seriously looking at a macbook air, as I never use the dvd drives and they have flash storage.

But i really only use laptops for movies/music/internet.

Sorry to hear that Captain.

I to also start soon, 22nd oct.. less than eight weeks and doesnt my current work place know it :D

Had my Acer laptop 4 years, still going like an absolute trooper. It's not flimsy, been down south with me and served me well. Battery's completely ****ed as I've left it plugged in constantly, but apart from that it's amazeballs. Yep.

same here, old acer aspire 6935G been going for a few years now, survived a lot of stick, been with me on many courses, been on tour hopping about helmand been chucked on and off helos(albeit in a daysack), still going strong with a much reduced battery life from being constantly plugged in, using it now in fact whilst down london.

my advise is it dosnt matter how much you spend got just as much chance of it dying on you, i've seen all types to laptops die on tour from macs to cheap netbooks to good old fashioned ruggedised military bricks, and it dosnt matter how much you keep on top of it its still gonna get covered in that lovely dust, (mines still has a fair amount left on it), and your lovely collegues can be somewhat heavy handed when it comes to getting kit on and off the old whirly birds:p, save yourself the possible heartache, dont spend a fortune, get something cheap, when you get back and you still feel you really need a good laptop spend you hard earned bucks!!!

sorry i cant be more precise with suggestions but i havnt been on the market for a laptop for years.

That's not too bad if its like school. I'm 27 so may find some of the lads immature but I'm sure I can deal with that.

Driver comm's spec. What hair cut will they be giving me?

No2 all over.

You may be surprised at the age range.

I was, I was 23 when I started basic and there was a lot of lads in their 20s, only a handful of lads from school...

Even some guys 32, but age only comes an issue if you make it

Ah, so a the latest breed of the Liney trade. In your trade, you're likely find the guys you work with are immature throughout your career :p.

You'll get it short throughout basic, you won't have a choice in that. Phase 2 you can possibly have it slightly longer. Then unit, pretty much what's under your beret is yours, what's around the back and sides is the Armies :p.

Give it a good chance.

People do leave in week 1, they say you have to stay until week 4 or whatever but if you really want out they will let you.

Some lads do leave off the cuff and some leave for valid reasons but give it a good chance.

I've heard of people leaving on day 1, that is just stupid.

Yea ive really got my mind set on this is my life now so dont really feel i cant pass it now. Only reason i feel i may not pass is any medical problems. Just finished packing.

Pretty much the same as me there mate, I'm 26 so you're not much older. Where is it you're doing basic at? I'll be at Pirbright to begin with then Minley.

Recruiter told me to try and get a trade when in the Army as I'm doing C3S.. leaves it this late to say that :/

I'd heard C3S is rubbish from what I've read but it'll be better than a supermarket aswell as being paid more.

I made a mistake, the trade you're going for isn't what I thought it was, the one I was thinking of is Comms Logistic Specialist.. the names are changing all the time, somewhat confusing lol. So I have no idea what people will be like in your trade, as your going RLC, not R-Signals.

Either way, good luck at Pribright, if you need any advice, feel free to ask away, wasn't too long that I went though there :).

When you start? I'm at pirbright Monday. What's CS3?

Will do thanks.

CS3 is sigs in the RE ?

Not sure sigs is that great of a trade. I guess the best trades are the artisan ones, i.e. sparky :)

Draughtsman are good trades too but boring.

Planty, fitter etc.

But as the sigs seem to say, "no comms no bombs"

My saying changed on tour to "No crate, no fixed laptop." That included Colonels, SF, and other nations soldiers among the many laptops I fixed out there. No one cares about bombs when they can't skype home to their family :p.
