**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

Well my prospects of joining RAF and University Air Sqadron has gone down the pan for a while now. Been told I got to wait at least a year after my surgery but judging by the botched results of the first operation I'll need another one. So at this rate I'll be lucky if I join in my third year of Uni (just started my first year in Sept).

I read in the news that the RAF are going to cut it's 'troops' by 10,000....good god we are really undermanned as it is!!

Last week i think it was, there was a shooting in the american base by that 'doctor' who went abit crazy! There are more troops based at that ONE american station than the entire manpower of the RAF

Yeah well I think there's another defense review up for the Armed Forces so they all coming up with the doomsday scenarios to get the public support. We had the talk of aircraft carriers, RAF cuts etc.

thought you couldnt even apply for the RAF til next year now anyway?

Well I got told all engineering jobs were gone but he immediately started talking about flight crew to me.

Aircrew?

WSOP? (weapon system operator)?

Do it...

Now...

Don;t stop and think about it...just do it...

How does the rank of SGT and £34k a year after your training sound?...nice yeh?

Yup that was the one and yeah I know the pay and opportunities are great, but like I said I got told they won't touch me with a barge pole until at least a year after my knee surgery which I had in April and problem is that I'm not recovering well at all so may need another surgery now so I was utterly gutted.

:( Shame.

I know what you mean about the op thought mate. I had a friend that went for it and had the same problem....even thought he passed all the tests they wouldn't accept him until he had about 1000 med board exams :(

Just stick at it. If you can get it then it's a really good career to get :)

To be fair I could pass the basic medical test without issues now, it's just that my knee is limited (and painful) when it comes to performing certain motions. What makes it worse for me is that I only had the smallest of problems and this was suppose to be the simplest of simplest operations from which I was suppose to be fully recovered in 6 weeks and it just became a nightmare for me and left my knee in a much worse state than it was before the knee. Also while I don't like having a go at NHS, the level of aftercare was rather poor to say the least.

Quick random question....

Rumor floating about (as they do...) that we get paid early this month? Is there any truth in this or random nonsense as usual.

And Zefan, was that you at the Crown earlier............wierdo :p

Evening Gents.

Sorry to barge into your thread but I was after a little advice regarding the RAF.

I'm currently in training (running and swimming several miles a week along with some gym time) for my departure to RAF Cranwell in a few months time to undergo officer selection.

Is anyone here an RAF officer, or familiar with the selection process? I've already been to the careers office several times so I know the basics of what's expected, I'm just after anything that can give me an edge over the other candidates.

Things I'm already aware of and working on are:

I'm already fit but still working on fitness.

Reading up on operations, aircraft, bases etc.

I'm trying to arrange a visit to a base to get some first hand information from people who already do the job.

I have no medical/criminal issues.

Any advice you can give me would be much appreciated.

Unsure, that's why am asking.

I cant see why suddenly they would decide to pay us all early for christmas this year, when was the last time that happened?
Nothings up on JPA, ring whoever deals with your pay/admin etc, I'v heard nothing from any Navy so sounds like its just a wierd rumour wherever you are - are you in a training establishment? Possible cause would be being around trainees that havnt had a christmas in the forces..

Training establishment, and my first Christmas in the RAF. Thanks, thought it was a lot of rubbish.
