Stripe straight out of training? Would that make you SLIIIIIIME CORP?

;)

Makes me a Comm Systems Engineer in the Royal Signals :p. But yeah, I'll be a lance jack before even going to a field unit, mostly because I've got to tell officers to do one when it comes to SOPs and such like.

But yeah, hopefully Germany, going to put all 3 requests for different units out there, so fingers crossed, I should get one. Will be gutted if I'm stuck in the UK.

Do you get to choose your postings whenever you finish training?

Or is it a case of you have a posting you'd like to get then you get put somewhere awful? :)

Seems by the time I get through training maybe there will be nothing happening in Afghanistan.

How long would you be at your posting?

Posting, when it comes to finishing all the training do you put forward where you'd like to go ? or do they put you anywhere, also how long would a posting be?

I take it with Afghan you can just go at anytime?

You put down 'area's you like to go (Usually countys) and they try get you as close as they can,but obviously this isn't always the case.

Yes you can get on detachment any time but if you are with a formed unit its more often, i'm not so I think its every 3ish years I go away, its not just afghan either, there's quite a few places.

With us, we put in 3 requests to specific units, and in order of preference too. If all goes to plan, you'll get your first choice, if not, second or third. Generally if you put say 3 down in German, but they are all full, you'll still hopefully get a German posting. But if a specific unit needs specific people, i.e. techs, they'll get posted there till they're full, 3 Div Signal Regiment needed loads of techs recently as they're deploying in Jan 2010, and 3 full courses of techs got posted there, which sucks, because it was literally just up the road from where do our phase 2 lol.

with Afghan, you could end up going any time. Generally though your unit will do a tour once* every 3 years, You could join them right after they come back, so you may not go away for 3 years, but as above, you could literally turn up there in October and be going on tour in January, just depends on where you get posted.

Day's over now though :D. Shame I've not got anywhere to go this weekend, so staying on camp :(.

The bar isn't even open on camp yet lol. Joys of Phase 2 establishment :p.

I'm based in Blandford, or as it's known locally, Blandahar. It's where the Royal School of Signals/DCCIS is based, so even though it's a Signals camp, it's tri-services.

Maybe it'll be back there when I deploy which could be Jan 2011, we'll see heh.

Maybe I'll see ya out there. Off back to KAF in Sept until mid-late Jan.

If they get rid of Timmy's I will be hunting down said zobs and beating them to death with a stick. Pizza Hut/BK/Subway I can live without to be honest, they were all rubbish anyway, I always found the free food from the yank mess better.

Ah shame, I was looking forward to trying the Pizza hut in Bastion. Never mind, who needs moral when you're in a war zone for 3 months at a time, away from your family, home life, everything.

6 months now! Well most guys seem to be getting 6 now, o the fun! :P

Think of the pub money you will have when you get back yet! Can see me chasing penguins for 6 months soon! :p

I don't see why they don't just stick with four months tbh. 6 months out there is a hell of a long time. But hey we knew what we signed on for.

How long ago did it change from 4 months? I've always expected to be out there for 6 months. Hopefully I won't find it too bad, as I've not got any ties to home, kids, wife etc. Plus if they Tories bring in this bigger operational bonus, I'll be happy lol.
