**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

Eddie182 - The Hortons is Canadian owned and I don't think they've jumped on the "War not Holiday" bandwagon yet and the Dutch/Germans etc all told the US commander where to go too :D

Ghosteh - It's the Army's frontline units (infantry/eng and their support etc) that mainly do 6 month tours. The Navy/RAF do anywhere from 2-4 months depending on the unit. The exception is the RAF Regt who do a 6 month tour. Some people in very specialist trades can do 8-10 month tours but they're normally staff positions.

Ah right ok. As I've only ever really looked at the Army side of life as that's the only service I wanted to join, I'd always just assumed every UK service did 6 month tours for operations.

Unfortunately, it looks like its getting changed to 6 months all across the board. Well for hot sandy places at least. Know a few folk who seem to be getting 6 months.

Not too bad to be fair.

Only for Un-Formed Unit people, for Formed Units (again RAF/Navy mainly) it'll stay as it is currently. My tours are 2-3 months but I do 2 a year every year non-stop (over 1000 days away in 8 years just on ops) as we're quite a small Det where as most DWR'd 4 month'ers may only do 1 tour every 2-3 years.

Have heard that rumour going around, I've still only got a standard 4 month OOA this time around though. The rumoured 6 month OOAs are one of the ever lengthening list of reasons why I won't be signing on again, and may even jump before my current engagement is up.

Things just aren't what they used to be, in fact after a lengthy discussion the other day we came to the conclusion that almost every perk we had in the late 90's has been, or is being taken away. But all the downsides either remain or have gotten worse.

Back to the ways of the post cold war 20th century I say.:D

What unit are you based with?

I'm currently an engineer on a small helicopter sqn but worked Harriers, AWACs, Tornados and Merlins.

Boom!

Bit drunk after a night out celebrating.. but...

Finally got my start date, 3rd October at ATR Bassingbourn.

Can't wait!!!!!!!!

Congrats :D. Get a nice early winter course, Final Ex will be fun for you all, digging into your shell scrapes in the frozen ground. That said, you get better sleep over the winter course hah.

Got my posting yesterday, off to 1st Armoured Division Signal Regiment, which is in Germany, and I can't wait!

They're due for deployment on Herrick 15 in November 2011, looking forward to that too :D.

Lucky git!

Wish we could get abroad postings, straight out of training!

Enjoy mate, don't know about the Army. But certainly in the RAF, out of training is so much different. The best bit - you can walk about camp! I swear I had to force myself not to march on my first day :p

I've not marched for a while now, but that's because I've been on the sick for around 2 months with a knee injury. But we don't have to march everywhere on camp, only on a specific route around the camp lol.

But yeah, the way things were looking, everyone on my course thought we were going to end up getting a posting in Dorset, which I wouldn't have been best pleased with lol. But yeah, actually going out to my new unit with one of my best mates, and I'm sure me and her will tear up Germany something rotten, can't wait :D.

If you don't mind me asking Ghosteh (and if you are allowed to give info), what sort of day to day work will you be doing in Germany, or will you still be doing further training there?

I have no idea what I'll be doing to be honest mate, will all depend if I get posted to an ICS(Information Communications Systems) Troop, or if I get posted to a Bowman Troop(Our main battle radio system). That said, I could get posted to a troop using a system such a ptarmigan, which I've never touched, so I could be learning on the job.

Generally though I'll be working in a First Line or Second Line maintenance workshop. Equipment will either come to us faulty, or we'll be called out to go test equipment in the backs of vehicles, fill out reports on the testing procedure and such.
But that's the boring stuff :p.

Wednesdays, finish early as that's always usually a sports afternoon in most units. So hopefully I'll spend most of Wednesdays snowboarding or something :D.
And Fridays generally you've got an early finish too, depending on what you've got on, finishing before lunch.
