**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

but even then Infantry still do longer training after 14weeks.

We do longer second phase training than you do!

There's a lot to learn to be an infantry soldier and non infantry units that fill that role every now and again don't do it very well (why should they, its not their job). The infantry may have an easy entrance requirement but that doesn't mean its an easy job, look up where the casualties come from in Afghan - the infantry (and marines) we are the ones who do the fighting.

Not to say I don't appreciate the work of the supporting arms who do a fine job making our lives easier and help us to win the enemy.

But don't think infantry is an easy option that anyone can do.

So has there been any hard info on how the armed forces are going to cut spending due to the budget cuts? I'm interested to know how it will effect recruitment, I know that the armed forces is already at/near capacity so I would expect recruitment to take even long or simply start turning away lots of people.
Only Whitehall truly know, everything else is speculation.

We're always going to need recruits so don't let this put any one off heading down the AFCO and enquiring. :)

Unlucky Andrew, did you have that in your prefrences?

He was probably too into his Farmville session to notice the time. Ill health stopped me applying. I make a great armchair general though! Now, I just need to start a deactivated weapon collection...

Had a fitness day last week and honestly 2 lads couldn't even finish running the 1.5mile and they were starting basic last sunday!

Made me feel a lot better when lads were coming in 11mins+... all of us due to start basic soon too.

11days, I am actually just counting the hours now my life is sad haha, out for a drink this weekend.. last drink to freedom and probably for a long while :)

Final application sent off today, last chance saloon for Sandhurst.

@Kettaz, I was at Bassingbourne this weekend doing an assault course. Nice golf course ;).

I am also interested in Sandhurst.

How competitive is it? What skills would you say are most necessary?
Some jobs require specific qualifications, they'll be listed on the Army recruitment website. Other than that being good at interviews, revising your knowledge of the Army and military in general, and having a good grasp of current affairs. Some regiments are easier to get into if you have a large bank balance.

The small matter of being a natural leader will help you too.

The application process takes about a year, and it is very competitive.

They want you to excel in broad areas: qualifications, fitness, competency and intelligence, problem solving, leadership, group work and general common sense, all of which are tested vigorously in the application process.

I've heard that as well, but never really thought about it. Why is that?
