**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

Hello gents :D

Back on my long weekend from ATR Bassingbourn, 7 weeks down, all fun and games :).

If anyone has training questions etc fire away

Yeh mate, I am dreading the winter training, although I will get a break for christmas which could be a life saver :)

At least I can always warm up, suppose summer months you can't cool down, although I seem to seize up in the cold, definitely going to be a mental challenge ha.

I did selection in winter and it was awful getting up at 530 in the freezing cold ha, more of the same.

last questions, what is a pt session like? what is the medical like at the start? thanks

On the medical they just give you an eye test again and you may have to do the hearing test again if its been over a year since the one you did at selection, the medical is nowhere as intense as the one you do at selection.

You will be getting up at 5:30 mon-sat and 6:30 on a Sunday. Its hard to imagine now but that extra hour really does feel like a lie in lol. On exercise I was getting to sleep at 12am and getting up at 3:30, whilst doing an hours stag in between lol, its weird how your body just keeps going and you dont feel tired, its another thing when your in a classroom though as its so easy to fall asleep.

There are three types of PT. Endurance, strength and conditioning and Battle PT.

Endurance - this is running and tabbing. As i said before the furthest I ran was 5 miles but the pace is really easy going. Tabbing is where you are carrying your bergan and later in the course your rifle too. Its pretty much just fast walking with a 100m jog every so often. In week 13 you have to do a 6 mile tab doing 15 minute miles. That was actually the easiest one I ever did as we normally did 10 minute miles for 3-4 miles. The hardest part about tabbing is the strain on your shoulders. On exercise we had to wear body armour all the time and we were carrying 35kg of kit. I was nearly in tears with the pain in my shoulders lol.

Strength and conditioning - this is normally circuits in the gym. They will put out ten mats in the gym and you do a different exercise on each mat such as pressups, situps, squats etc for 20 seconds then you move on to the next mat. Sometimes they will let you go into the gym to use the weights and rowing machines but i only did that twice in pt lessons, after week 7 you can use the gym in your free time.

Battle PT - This starts of really basic doing forward rolls in the gym and jumping over boxes, its laughable how basic it is but its to prepare you for the assault course, on week 6 you start on the assault course and battle pt is always on the assault course normally doing section races. In week 13 we had a competion carrying a 70kg dummy across the assault course as a section (8 men) to see which section could do it quickest.

Always give it your best in PT as the PTIs can make your life hell. We once had a 20 minute beasting because someone hadnt put their seat belt on, on the coach coming back from the local swimming pool.

Hedge - When you arrive mine's a Tea, White, 2 Sugars (from your new Line CPL :D)

Edit - Damn it, on a course next week!

Hows things for you anyway mate, you enjoy time in cyprus?

Mate I had some of the best times of my life out there! :p

Sure the squadron had its big downer with the crash but we had our own ways of getting over it. I'm sure the Aki Arms had a massive boost in profit that month.

lol @ ianh though, get them brews in!

A Little update on my RAF situation...

I Started back in May 2009, 9 weeks basic training at Halton, but due to groin injury took my 17 weeks in total, was quite depressing but overall had a good time making new friends etc. Graduating from Halton was a very proud day for me.

After Graduating myself and my other AMM friends all had to stay on Hold at Halton because Cosford courses were full up, So we stayed until we eventually headed to Cosford in November/December time.

A bit more holding time at Cosford through December and my AMM course finally started properly on the First day back after Christmas Holidays..

Spent the last 6 months going through each phase of training and making some of the best friends in my life. Laughed more than Ive ever laughed, got drunk more than ever, seen some funny stuff and had an absolutely brilliant part of my life there :)

Graduated on Tuesday this week, so finally an LAC and no longer a trainee, I head to Lossiemouth on Sunday to Start this tuesday coming. Cant wait.

Im gonna be back on OCUK a bit more I guess once Im up there with Internet, so Ill keep you up to date on progress.

To conclude. 2009 to 2010 has been the best year of my life. Regret not joining when I was younger.

Hows your brush sweeping skill?
