Silverstone

Like so many of England's racing circuits, Silverstone started life as an aerodrome. When the Second World War ended in 1945, England's other two circuits, Donington Park and the legendary Brooklands, had fallen into disrepair. And so it was that the outer taxiways and interconnecting runways of Silverstone became adopted by the Royal Automobile Club as the home for the British Grand Prix in 1948. The circuit was fast and challenging and in 1949 the shape was formed that remains the basis of the track to this day.

When the Formula One World Championship was incepted in 1950, Silverstone held the very first round, won by Guiseppe Farina in an Alfa Romeo. In 1951 the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC) was handed the lease by the RAC, and huge modifications were made. The pits were moved to the straight between Woodcote and Copse, from the Farm straight where they had originally been, and a short circuit was built within the larger circuit, cutting from Becketts corner to Woodcote.

From 1955 the British Grand Prix swapped venues between Aintree and Silverstone, but with the advent of the 1960s, Aintree fell out of favour and the race was switched between Silverstone and Brands Hatch.

In 1971 the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC) bought the entire 720 acre plot on which Silverstone sits and went about redeveloping the track. New pits were built and a chicane was erected at Woodcote which provided close finishes and great overtaking opportunities.

In 1987, with speeds reaching astounding levels, a corner was built before Woodcote, and in 1992 a new complex of corners was created between Farm and Woodcote. And in recent years various upgrades have been made to the track's facilities. A racing school now exists at the circuit and with government funding a new bypass has been built, greatly improving access to the once notoriously out-of-the-way venue.

In 2010 came another major change to the circuit's Formula One layout, designed to further improve the venue for spectators and provide an even greater driver challenge. The new infield layout juts right at the reworked Abbey bend before heading into the new Arena complex of turns. This takes drivers on to the main straight of Silverstone’s National circuit, before rejoining the previous Grand Prix layout at Brooklands.

Done a little early as its clearly the best GP :p

Seems to be quite a few of us going (well, just for the Friday this time :)).

Is the betting open on what McLaren pit crew will fluff up this time?

God I bet that team is a running gag amongst all the other pit crews.

In all honesty, i prefer watching the race at home. See a lot more of what is going on.

Same, although I will do a race at some point just for the experience.

I find Friday practice is a lot more relaxed, roving grandstand access is a bonus too. Obviously nearly 3 hours of F1 cars going round (weather permitting) plus the support series means a lot of track action during the whole day plays a big part as well.

Yeah Fridays are great value in terms of your 'exposure' to F1. I'm heading up to Silverstone for just the friday this year.

But the full weekend is worth it for the atmosphere. Especially if something great happens.

I remember watching Lewis charge through the field in GP2 at Silverstone in 2006. The commentators said it was the first time they had ever seen the crowd get more behind a support race than the actual F1.

Then in 2007 when Lewis stuck it on pole at Silverstone, the place erupted. It was fantastic.

I've also been to Spa, which is just amazing in its self, but I was there in 2008 when Lewis won (before he got it stripped from him), which was brilliant.

Theres the downsides too. I was at Spa in 2009 when Lewis and Button never even got around to us on the first lap :(.

But overall, going to an F1 race is an absolute must do for anyone even mildly into the sport, or who just wants to have an eargasm at the glorious sound!

In all honesty, i prefer watching the race at home. See a lot more of what is going on.

I always felt the same until we rented fan vision then you don't feel like you are missing too much :) In 2010 we had no idea Alonso got a stop/go until after the race.

When I was a nipper we used to live just outside Towcester — open the windows and watch the race on the TV — best of both worlds.

Used to love watching all of the helicopters as well!

We have one of the jumbo screens in Club Silverstone but, i still miss most of the race. they need to put more screens by the bar :)

My Mrs for some reason has a unexplained hatred of all the helicopters at Silverstone, Sunday is just a nightmare as she rants from about 7am about them :D

RB have a double floor? Did I miss this?

Any details anywhere?

Also, does anyone know if drive through penalties will be bumped up to stop and go penalties again this year due to the short pitlane, or have they moved the limiter line further up the pit entrance?

All I have is Gary Anderson mentioning Red Bull are pulling a new "duct that connects the exhaust gases and the airflow off the car with the diffuser to enhance downforce" which (in that wording) implies something like last years blown diffuser with something else doing the blowing...

Not sure what they have managed to think up but I hope someone a. makes a good copy quickly, b. makes a fuss to get it removed or c. it turns out to break the engines in the Red Bulls (racing is no fun when someone "does a Vettel" like last year)

Hoping that Button wins this. He doesn't seem to portray any hunger after winning the tile with Honda/Brawn.

He's got the hunger, just something isn't right with this years car for him, so every weekend he's been turning up fighting to get the car set up and going, with him just being left behind.

No chance he'll win this weekend though, smart money is on Vettel with the Red Bull (annoyingly) or the great British summer to open up and give Perez that win...

Hopefully the FIA ban it as it's clearly not as the rules intended if this is true, explains why once again Vettel is able to blast away at the start though, Newey and his holy grail.
