British Grand Prix 2013, Silverstone - Race 8/19

Points doesn't prove ANYTHING about how well a driver has done in a particular race nor season.

Basically, how it works is that the winner of the race gets 25 points. The 2nd place guy gets 18 points. And so on. What that usually means is that the winner has done better than the guy in 2nd place. And so on. Over the course of a season, the guy with the most points wins the championship.

How would you decide the championship then?

His point being directed to those who look only at points to decide the relative merits of a driver - as demonstrated today, they don't tell the whole story of a race weekend and so relying on them as a measure of driver skill is flawed.

Rosberg won today and got 25 points but arguably only because of two equipment failures that afflicted two people who would likely have finished ahead of him, does that make him a better driver than them or merely luckier on the day?
