BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Is there a technical reason for upload being lower? As in a difference in the hardware requirements for the ISPs?

Was wondering the same thing - they're still in the mindset of ADSL which by its nature is different download to upload but fibre it shouldn't matter at all.

I think it's just Openreach being Openreach. 220 Mbps upload is possible as it stands today with FTTP, but so few ISPs sell it because Openreach charge a fortune for it. It's actually cheaper to get two 900/100 lines. I hope they change soon (unless there's some technical limitation I'm not aware of) as so many alt nets are now offering full symmetrical.

Edit it's probably just profiteering, they'll cling onto it as long as possible.

How come some people are getting 1Gbit down and up on fibre?

The variety of FTTP that Openreach rolled out is called GPON - Gigabit Passive Optical Network. GPON isn't a symmetric product so you won't get 1Gbps up and down through it. From memory it's limited to 220Mbps upload though very few ISP's sell that as the Openreach cost is quite high.

In the future we will likely see XGS-PON - 10 Gigabit Symmetric Passive Optical Network. The key differences are the X and the S. So it's a 10Gbps symmetric product. Upgrading from GPON to XGS-PON isn't too difficult, it's hardware replacement but the same fibres can be used.

It doesn't mean Openreach will make it possible to have symmetric lines. Most people don't use much upload, they can sell more as people will go to the new download speed to get more upload and they have very little competition at present.

Says it was delivered on the 27th, I posted it on the 24th.
BT are beyond annoying.

As long as cancelling the direct debit is enough I'll leave them to it.
I got the text chasing it, replied with tracking number, less than an hour later had a thankyou text and heard no more - just reply with the tracking.

I'd be amazed if they rolled out XGS-PON and didn't offer a fully symmetric product. They need to move on from GPON at some point and going to XG-PON doesn't seem likely when XGS-PON would cost pretty much the same.

Openreach FTTP install day - nice engineer, tidy work and quick job.

First speedtest looks good!

By not using GPON.
CityFibre use GPON the same as Openreach, they're just happy to sell 32 users a 1Gbps symmetric service on a PON port that only has 2.5Gbps down and 1.25Gbps up. Openreach aren't. No doubt there's also an element of protecting the leased line business about this decision, but they're also regulated in a way that CityFibre aren't.

Get a TBB set up, are you with TalkTalk or just a reseller?

Is your connection PPPoE or just DHCP?
Nothing much to see apart from super low latency:

Compared to yesterday's VM connection:

I'll keep and eye on it but I already notice how much more responsive it is in simple website loading etc. Next week will be the fun task of cancelling VM :)

Talk Talk Business are a funny bunch, as my old Zen FTTC service has now been halted as of a few weeks ago. I've been looking around for backup options, I was going to go back with Zen but I want some provider redundancy should they have a problem.TTB have given me a go live date in a weeks’ time, but they still need to send an engineer out to put in a new phone line even though there is one there ready to be used. :D

Ive only used TTB over TT as they offer a static IP and it was cheaper, so I have just paid for the contract up front.
