BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Mine came back on 5 hrs later , they are still working around my area fitting FTTP so probably someone missing in the cabs
Well the engineer came out this morning. Figured that the cable had somehow ‘snapped’ inside the grey box on the outside wall. Put a replacement line in there, everything working perfectly for 12 hrs…until the red solid LOS light is on again! No internet!

I always have tea/biscuits ready for the engineers when they come into your home, they always appreciate especially if they have to do more than a simple drill through wall and mount.
Maybe the engineers are a bit more open to that where you are, They wouldn't entertain it here. I'l be drilling the hole and pulling the scab for them so all the have to do is attach the fiber and away we go!

Generally how I operate as well with both Openreach and Virgin install teams if my needs/wants/requirements are clearly above that of a 'standard install', do the donkey work for them, make their lives as easy as possible and they will then usually oblige.

I think I had done the donkey work when I lived in my flat for a sky install due to sky stating they don't go in lofts.
I have all my network equipment in the kitchen cupboard so I'll make a draw wire from there to the outside of the building once I see it going live but that could be years away yet.

I have a question which I think I know the answer to just looking for confirmation.

Recently upgraded to full fibre a few months ago, was able to choose from 300mb, 600mb or 900mb packages. Went for 300mb in the end - working flawlessly so far. If I did want to upgrade to a faster package, contract permitting - I suppose its just a click of a button on their end? no additional hardware installs needed? Openreach Engineer already installed FTTP box on the premises on initial 300mb package install.

Yup, speak to the ISP and they will upgrade it. They'll likely lock you in to another minimum term contract though so it might be worth waiting until the contract is up and when you move ISP.

I have just checked on the Openreach website and its showing as 1000mbps is available now but there are only a few options showing on the Uswitch website (Sky, Vodaphone, Plusnet, Talktalk and Cuckoo) but thats about it, there is not even a BT option. Apologies for asking, does anyone know why this is? I still have a couple of months (Jan/Feb) before the end of my Virgin contract but i am getting prepared to switch but currently pretty limited.

Most likely if it's a new area is that it takes a little time for it show as available with all ISPs.

Tried that after I got an email stating:

We’re getting in touch to update you on our Ultrafast Full Fibre build. We’ve reviewed our build plans, and currently we can’t deliver Full Fibre to XXXX

Firstly that website suggests it will tell you if 'You're in plan' or 'sorry, but you are not in plan'

Mine says - 'Not yet available'

Then when you click the 'keep me updated' link it says: 'At the moment, our Ultrafast Full Fibre build plans don’t include your area'

I'm in a close, off a main road which does seem to have FTTP at most addresses.

The house is connected with underground cables, but ironically I can see a telephone pole that has upgraded FTTP wires from the back of my house - I don't see why they can't connect a wire from there to my house.

You might potentially. If you escalate to Openreach's complaints team and speak to the right people, they might survey and decide it's viable.

Assuming it's clear line of sight, actually is on the back of your garden, and not going over other people's land etc to add complexity and wayleave issues.

It took them a while to get to us. Apparently we had a lot of underground cable, put in in the 70's when they used aluminium. An engineer told me they didn't want to touch it until the time was right as it had a habit of falling apart and then would need to be replaced. Seems they bypassed a lot of the ducted cable and just put it across some new poles instead, probably cheaper and easier. Not that that helps you but I think they are just going after all the easy low hanging fruit first.
