BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Against my own better judgement I've signed up with Vodafone 900 for £36 a month (cash back also etc).

Get the automated emails for 'my account'. Can't log in, reset password, they send a security code to my phone. Code invalid. Looks like I'll have to call them. Marvellous.

I had similar, their account system is naff when it comes to setting up new ones. Your account isn't available until your service is marked as live and complete, well mine wasn't anyway.

Thanks. When do you get the log on details to use your own router? Or do I have to get that via Live Chat along with a static IP?

BT fibre been down all day today , got a message We'll need to send an engineer to fix an issue outside of your residence . Engineer fix by 03/11/2023 @ 18:00 allegedly oh joy , glad I kept my VM till discount runs out in Jan 2024

Out of the big providers who will do deals and cashback etc. your options for IPv6 are probably Sky and BT. Giganet might be an option but I can't seem to get any prices out of them at the moment as they just say "coming soon" even when I put in an address that already has FTTP.

You're going to run into black friday deals in a couple of weeks anyway so it might be worth waiting.

I also need a static IP, but yeah will stick with Aquiss for now and see what deals come out.

I could run the stuff that needs a static IP over my VM connection but I'd rather just keep that as a backup as I only ever got it due to cheap TV.

Mine has gone down this morning at 07:59 hrs. Red LOR light on the open-reach box. BT sending out an engineer tomorrow morning apparently.

I think that IPv6, static IP, cheap deals with cashback is a "pick two of three" type arrangement.
Perfect analogy that.

Is there any particular reason currently for IPv6 being a requirement for a domestic user currently that I'm failing to see? CGNAT is currently the one thing I look to actively avoid with an ISP other than on mobile data connections.

I run some cloud services which support IPv6, it’s easier to see if they’re working as expected without using a jump box somewhere. I also do a lot of Homelab stuff for work and it’s been a useful feature to have. Certainly not as much of a hard requirement as a static IP, but useful for me nonetheless and not something I’m willing to give up for my primary connection.

Why are you moving away from Aquiss?

Price. I have a secondary VM connection, so I'm not too fussed if there's an issue with the Openreach FTTP as I can fail over to VM. With Aquiss I know it would be sorted quickly and via email/tickets, whereas with other providers I'd have to jump through hoops to prove it's not my AV/WiFi/client etc. With a secondary connection it negates to requirement for quick support.

I’ve got infinity running at 60mbps (actually about 55mbps). The ADSL cable runs under floorboards and I can’t change it easily. Will it stop me getting getting 900mbps if I upgrade now it’s available? I can’t seem to see what the max speed is. Everywhere says 24mbps but obviously that’s not true

No as Openreach will install a new fibre and ONT to your house. It'll be done in two stages, the first is where they'll pull the fibre outside your house, the second part is the inside installation and they'll place the ONT where you want (within reason).

Thanks, where I actually want it should be much easier
