...closure for all those on the edge of their seats with the Vodafone install mentioned above. OR came out today and replaced the large ONT & BBU with just a new small ONT and connected the Vodafone router. It was going to take a while to activate the new ONT so he went to the next job then phoned when it went live. Except it wasn't live. I could connect to the VF router fine but in the logs could see it wasn't getting a public IP. A reboot of the VF router triggered a firmware update, so it must have connected briefly post reboot to grab it, but after that it was denied pairing. After waiting a while then rebooting the ONT it then all kicked in

Weird that Openreach did an ONT swap, maybe they're trying to remove all the Huawei stuff

Yeah I think they have to remove it all by a certain date? Thats the only reason I can think they would swap it as the existing kit looked good as new still. Shame to lose the battery backup, which I gather the older installs had, but he won't be using the land line so will still have mobile access should the power or fttp have issues.

There could be lots of reasons and we will never know, getting the units with the battery removed means nobody is going to be calling in a fault with OR when the batteries wear out. It's also possible that they swapped you to an ONT with a 2.5Gb port on so you're ready for the >1Gb services

15 months into my Plusnet 500Mb contract I called them to upgrade to the 1Gb package.

£40pm and lord knows the bump in price come April.

Compared to Virgin, very stable. I use my own router though - with 2.5gb WAN and LAN.

I have 3 boys who stream and game, missis who on Netflix and it handles it without any issues.

I get 6ms ping to bbc from Derbyshire.

Not surprised it's plenty, each of those tasks is at most 50mbps each.

If that, Netflix 4k HDR is about 16Mbit.

Yeah chances are even a 100Mbit connection would be fine with all that simultaneously, with bandwidth to spare too.

How's the router that comes with BT? Tempted by their 900/100 plan and it comes with game pass so that's a saving for me. But as I stream my pc remotely is the latency ok with BT and their router?

Currently on VM with Gog1 with 100 upload

If you are currently using a Virgin Media Hub then the BT-supplied device will be fine

Latency on BT FTTP will be superior to VM for sure. Any FTTP should be sub 10ms compared to 20ms ish on VM - in fact you'd probably see more like somewhere around 5ms.

Plusnet is still selling new contracts, it’s just BT are pushing for new customers to join EE (though currently you can still get services from them and Plusnet).

Plusnet don’t have a digital voice service AFAIK, so that’s probably why.

Isn’t that what cell phones are for?

I jest, I know certain equipment only works with a landline so they can be quite important for certain people. But there is a need for that equipment to get updated and work over the internet or use cellular communications.

Is there any disadvantage to Plusnet over BT? Their 900 is £39.99 but the same with BT is £59.99
