BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

OK could just be a one off problem in the area that has caused some problems.

where is your modem installed as it is one hot device if not ventilated properly ?

based on what others said I mounted mine vertically to a wall to allow better ventilation and it remains fairly cool.

Reports earlier on in the thread are the BT engineer leaves the home hub to toast on top of the modem.

General consensus was to mount it vertically.

Has anyone has experience of BT Inf in Leeds? I am moving from Virgin because they suck ass!

I`m at Lofthouse, Wakefield on border with Leeds (nr Rothwell) and had Infinity installed.

Didn't have much problem and apart from the other weekend its been fine.

get about 35-37 connection.

Ditched home hub as the wireless was ropey and laid ethernet from modem to my router upstairs.

Groen, the comment about the modem just failing??? Yes that's what happens to most electronic devices when they fail THEY JUST STOP WORKING CORRECTLY.

As one other person has said listen to the advice from others that have had the same problem as yourself.

And make sure that the modem has plenty of good airflow hence why people recommend putting the Modem on the wall vertical so that you have a good convection flow of cool air through the device cooling the chipset!!

im having real problems with my wireless. ive got really good speed 38 MBps down and 8 MBps up but i keep losing internet connection. it stays connected to the modem but with no internet connection, happens atleast 3~4 times a day. ive swapped channels but that didnt help.
also whenever im downloading something for the first 1% my download speed is low in the KBs but once it gets past 1% it jumps to 4MB/s until 99% then download speed drops to 0 and i either lose connection to internet or/and modem, it then takes couple minutes until i can reconnect and finish the downloads.
this only happens when i use wireless so im wondering if the modem or if theres something thats interfering which i cant think of?

should also say i thought it was the laptop wireless card but bought new laptop not to long ago and its happening to it aswell

you mean lose wireless connection to the home hub not the modem as the modem is not the wireless device.

use something like inssider to view nearby wifi connections and see if any interfere with yours.

Definitely worth it, don't BT have a deal on atm? like half price for 3 months or whatever.

Depends how you use your net I suppose.

Gone down again.

thought the home hub was the modem and the other thing the router? lol

ye used inssider to check, im on channel 11 and no other wireless in my area using 11, closest is 7. i was on channel 1 with 4 other wireless before i swapped to 11 and problem still happening.

Bah, too much info and busy with uni work, can anyone give me a quick idea of the estimates for 40mb being available in area's. Are they just listing everywhere as the end of next quarter, then as that date approaches, moving them all back another quarter, are the dates complete BS, is there any way to find out the real expected dates at all?

In ealing, the exchange is listed, afaik, as being upgraded for FTTC, but my phone number comes up on the checkers as not available, it was Sept 30th, but moved to Dec 31st just before end of September.

Do they upgrade and exchange then do the boxes quickly, then move on to other area's, or could it be months and months before my road has access?

I'm with Be but have been having more and more trouble with our internet in the past 6months and would like to get to 40mb asap, with Be, last time I checked, still ages away from offering it.

I've had 38/8.5 since March without a single dropout. Can't speak for anybody else having issues of course, but personally I've never had a better connection.

Drunkenmaster: I'm also with Be, connection been really flakey last few months, which is most unusual, as it's usually a rock solid 2.5mb.

Phoned Be on Monday for my MAC code, I'm off to BT Infinity, as I can't see Be making any firm commitments to fttc any time soon.

Post other stats in from telnet please.

we can then see if there is any room for improvement and gauge line distance etc.

Anyone else having infinity problems? mine went down for 1 hour earlier, back up now, some sites not accesible though.

Must be a local issue, I'm having the same problem. My Infinity went down earlier today and it's still playing up now. Some web pages are loading, others aren't. I'm using Google DNS so it's not a BT DNS problem.
