BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Yes, they have in-built VDSL2 modems, so you only have one box. I have the Fritz!box and it does a solid job.

It actually syncs slightly lower than the BT modem, but not by much (~100k or so).

Got the new modem installed yesterday, having some teething issues though, some web pages taking a while to load, speed seems ok though, as does ping in gaming. Hopefully it will be ok tomorrow or i will have to call and get a new one......the old one was working fine

Heh, I've had three of the original modems, first one went thermonuclear and died. Second one bricked when I was unlocking it, so I used the overheating excuse again to get it replaced.

I finally thought enough was enough, and replaced it with the Fritz!box.

My cabinet has still not been done, most of them in shrewsbury have. I spoke to an openreach engineer activating one close by the other day. He told me he was supposed to be activating my cabinet that day but it hadn't been installed due to a blockage. He couldn't give me any further info. Not going to hold my breath, looks like I'm gonna miss out until I move. Sucks to be me!

The 2850N is compatible with ADSL & VDSL, which gives you the best of both worlds.

Will be ordering mine next week hopefully.

According to their own product page the 2850 is only capable of handling a 50Mb/s connection. This makes sense as it's based on the 2830 (also according to their own product page). Edit: Actually is doesn't. I was thinking of the 2820, the 2830 is capable of handling just under 80Mb/s.

There could be a lot of unhappy people when 80/20 eventually becomes available.

2850N is the one to go for, is '100mb/s Firewall Throughput Performance', others are 50mb/s.

Why does their website state 50Mb/s?

The Vigor 2850 is a variant of our Vigor 2830 series with the addition of an extra VDSL interface (for the BT Infinity™ service) for connectivity up to 50Mb/s. This makes the Vigor 2850 ideal for users with ADSL now who might upgrade to VDSL later, but also for using VDSL as our primary feed and ADSL as your secondary or backup feed. Alternative WAN ports can insead provide connectivity to Ethenet feeds or a 3G cellular service using a USB adaptor. This latest router series includes support for professional features such as VLAN tagging, Gigabit Ethernet and dual-band switchable WiFi ('n' models).

I don't know why, I'm going by this link http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/comparison.html

Have just sent a email to Draytek to get some clarification on this, so should have reply tomorrow hopefully.

Looking at Draytek, they don't make things very clear on their site.

The 100Mb/s is just quoted for the firewall throughput and could quite possibly only be possible when connected via the Ethernet WAN port.

It'll be interesting to see what thay have to say.

Just out of interest why are people so interested in having a combined solution?

Wondering this myself. Sure, having one box is better than two but I don't see the point in spending £100+ for the privilege. Personally I prefer having the BT VDSL modem then being able to use a real firewall like a Juniper SRX, though I see there is now an SRX 110 with built in VDSL but at a cost of around £500 I don't see that replacing my SRX210 and BT modem setup any time soon :)

Ive already queried the 2850n speed query with their UK distributor:

Hi I was looking at buying a Draytek 2850n but the spec page shows a throughput connection speed of upto 50meg (as opposed to 800meg on the 2750n)

Is this 50meg limit correct or an error?

Thanks for your email. The maximum firewall througput on this model is 100meg.Please see the comparison chart below. 50Mb/s(BT Infinity) is used for reference.

So (im on 38 dl and 9 ul now on the 40/20 profile) if / when BT ugrade their infrastructure and go with an 80/20 profile - the router will cope with the 80/20 profile upto 100meg ?

Cheers

This router is capable to handle 100MB line if available.

Regards,

Ive also seen a post on the BT community forum where someone points

The site says that it's compatible with the following VDSL2 Profiles: 8a, 8b, 8c, 8d, 12a, 12b, 17a, 30a.

Given that the 30a profile can give speeds up to 200meg, I can't see it being a problem :smileyhappy:

Gone to have some very happy peeps having fttp.:(

But, according to BT engineer I had here this morning, any new build housing going up, it virtually guarantee 100% they will only install fibre to them.

Support for 30a doesn't mean it is able to route 200Mb/s of traffic. :p

No idea, not really my thing, but they've confirmed it will handle 100meg throughput and that'll do me for now :)

Router turned up about 1/2 hour ago and she's a beast - big compared to the HH3 and OR modem - Won't be able to swap it out just yet as the connection is being used, but plugging the Draytek in and using my phone the wireless signal is strong throughout the house as opposed to none existent to some areas with the BT kit (had to use a second router as a WAP / extender) so should be able to do away with that now :)

I'll post some pics and update once I get chance to set her up :)
