BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Has anyone had weird issues with broadband and homeplugs? Using homeplugs my upload is terrible but download is fine. Plug the PC into the router and it's fine.

Weird! I'd expect upload:download to be 1:1

EDIT: ISSUE SOLVED - DO NOT plug the DC adapters for the router and home hub etc anywhere near your homeplug, although it's OK to plug these adapters into a gang plug that's away from the socket. Weird!

Sweeeeeeeet, got an email today as I was finishing work to say Infinity was is now available in my area. Just placed my order for Option 2 with what I'm hoping is truly unlimited downloads, because I will be downloading a lot.

Estimated Installation is March 7th.

It is truly unlimited. The first month I downloaded nearly a terabyte with no repercussions.

You've no doubt heard a lot of people complain how hot they get and the early modems are starting to fail completely. Rather than be honest about it BT just make up crap about how these "new" modems are needed for 80/20 which is absolutely untrue.

I was told by Victoria Kain (BT CEO's PA) that the new modem would provide for better functionality for the future upgrades as well as the overheating issue.

March 20th :p

Heh, you wish.

The technical trial doesn't finish until the end of March, at which point people on the trial pay up or go back to 40mbit. In effect: there's no way BT retail to launch it to their customers at large any time before then, since it's still in a trial period.

The engineer who told you 80/20 "would be available soon" was more than likely giving out the slightly delayed information that *technically* 80/20 is available "soon"... or, already is, to a wide audience, as of a few weeks ago.

Just had my speed bumped up to the 80/20 product to be released in the near future, Plusnet want to trial it for a while before it gets released to the masses.

So far I'm a bit disappointed. Apparently my line can only handle 45-50meg down, and 6meg up, though I'm not surprised because I already had my modem unlocked and it's maximum predictions seem to be spot on, I was just hoping that they'd be wrong :p I'm 600m away from the cabinet and my line is made of yucky aluminium so I can't really expect any different.

Plusnet haven't revealed how much they will charge for 80meg, in fact I don't think the wholesale prices have even been determined yet. If it ends up costing much more than 40meg, I think I'll just revert back. I'm not paying double the price for only 6-7 extra meg.

Presumably it's more about the aluminium than it is the distance? My cabinet is further away than that and the modem (unlocked) claims I should be able to get better than 80/20. I'm not seeing the potential full 17a rates that some people are, but I should be okay for the near future.

What were you getting on 40/10?

I assume you're testing with a wired network connection?

Yes I'd say it's down to the Aluminium more than the distance. Alu tends to be a lot more lossy than copper.

Yeah, I always use wired whenever possible, especially on this desktop.

I was previously getting the full 40meg, and the same upload on 40/10. So I'm a little disappointed, but as I said not entirely surprised.

The modem states:

Max: Upstream rate = 6990 Kbps, Downstream rate = 49908 Kbps
Path: 0, Upstream rate = 7018 Kbps, Downstream rate = 50157 Kbps

So yeah, I've pretty much maxed out my lines capabilities.

Well, after the good, comes teh not so good :(

After finishing up for the day I decided to have a play with some of the settings on the router and there is an issue where everything I make a change to the settings which requires a reboot the internet connection drops and I have to manually go to internet settings, change the password, apply, reboot agin before the net connection comes back up :( - ive rasied this this Draytek.

But there is another issue, which I didn't notice until I couldn't access the wifi repeater in the lounge.

My setup goes:

Connection into houe -> 2850n (In study and hardwired to PC / Printer / Laptop and Homeplug) -> Homeplug (Study) -> Homeplug (Lounge) -> 2nr router / WAP -> Media Streamer and BT Vision Box / TV

After looking on my PC the network "Map" couldn't "see" the homeplugs or anything beyong so, no media straemer (cant use) No WAP (no extended signal to that side of the house) and, worst of all, no iplayer or on demand TV :(

After some reading up it appears to be some IP allocation of teh homeplugs and a reboot of these will help, it did and the Streamer / WAP etc are fine, but no iPLayer im getting a "Code 0, Failed to load resource"

After more reading a reset of teh BT Vision Box seems to cure it, so reboot that (Hard reboot, cable out the back jobby).

I am then met with the boot up screen

Boroadbank Connection - Tick

Connection to Home Hub - X

Rinse, repeat, cant even get any TV without the HH being installed, it just won't go past this stage :(

It appears that in the recent software update to Vision (notice the colours have changes slightly) the reboot requires it to scan and check for the HH3 (IP allocation / confirmation or something ?) so all up and running nicely (bar the PITA manual input of password on any option changes to teh 2850n) BUT no TV :(

Unplugged everything and put OR modem and HH3 back in - straight in, media streamer, TV, Iplayer OD TV.

It was late by the time id got to this point and have to leasve the TV / Media streamer fully up and running today as the wife is at home with the kids.

But can anyone help with the HH scan at start up of teh Vision Box and any workround (which also leaves me with iplayer) ?

Many thanks

Quite happy with that now!

I get slightly better speeds at the socket but this is the compromise I make for not having to wire Cat6 through the house...

But, speaking from my experience, there are better routers than the HH3 available.

I couldn't get on with the HH3, so for fun I made a time capsule, containg photos, newspaper,HH3 & other bits all in a sealed metal box & buried it under the new hard standing I built.:D
