BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

He he, cheers - yeah I flashed to the latest firmware before setting it up :)

Nice!
Do you know what your sync stats were before/after rather than the speedtest results? I'm interested to see if the modem in the Draytek is actually just better. Now I'm on 80/20, the Openreach modem is claiming 83mbit is attainable, but it's syncing at 67? very irritating, I want my extra 13mbit!

I will be getting the non wireless version since I'm happy with my dual band wifi AP right now, but it's still £190 which is a lot of money for a bit of extra speed (the native IPv6 is nice but Zen don't have native IPv6 anyway!)

Even though I ordered it, someone in here, or another thread, mentioned that even though the BT site says I can get it under a post code search, it might not be available. Had a quick look round, and could only find Virgin cabs, which would explain over utilisation, but no BT cabs. Asked my neighbour for her number and ran it through the checker and it's confirmed. How far will the infinity cab be away from my flat?

That was me :p if their number (your neighbour) shows its available it shouldn't be a problem. There is no set distance - you will just have to go looking for it. It could be meters or miles away. Do you know what cab you are connected to? There is a postcode spreadsheet available that gives you this information

Okay so whats the real reason then? :p it was running fine before.

You've no doubt heard a lot of people complain how hot they get and the early modems are starting to fail completely. Rather than be honest about it BT just make up crap about how these "new" modems are needed for 80/20 which is absolutely untrue.

No idea, I know the exchange though if there's any difference?

Can you tell I'm a newb? Been with Virgin since 2008.

If you trust me your postcode i can have a look for you, and try and find what cab number you are on :)

Thinkboradband forums would be a good place to ask for help too - some of the isp's lurk on there too and have lots of useful info.

My mate lives in watford too, was walking around near vicarage road - there were lots of fibre cabs up already on my walk :)

Ok Chris, here is the information for your postcode

LWWAT WATFORD WD***** {LWWAT}{P84} 0 97% 10.06 2 Yes FTTC
LWWAT WATFORD WD***** {LWWAT}{P134} 0 2% 5.7 2 Yes FTTC

For your postcode (i have starred it out), you are connected to either cab 84 or 134. 97 per cent of lines for your postcode are served by cab 84, the other 2 percent are by cab 134. If connected to cab 84 you can expect an uplift (multiplier) of 10.06 on the current adsl2 speed. Seeing as you cabs were in phase 2 of deployment - i would be very surprised if they havent been done yet.

My cab was supposed to be in phase 5, which was a while back, and it still hasn't been done. they are in phase 7 or similiar now

Sorry, what's phase 5 and 7? And what is the uplift multiplier?

The phase is basically the date/period of when the cabs/exchanges went live for FTTC.

If you see here

http://www.broadband.co.uk/guides/infinity-broadband/

watford was originally in phase 1 - so basically in the first set of exchanges in the country to go live for FTTC. Your cab was part of phase 2 acccording to the leaked document that is readily available.

The uplift multiplier is basically the average increase in speed somebody with an ADSL2 connection will expect. so if on adsl2 you have a speed of 4Mbit, you could expect FTTC to provide an increase of 4x10 = 40 Mbit

lozzd: Before I killed my 2750N, I found using it got me an extra 3mb - 4mb increase in download & upload went from 5.1mb to 8.5mb.
So, I expect the 2850N to just as good, plus wireless reception is much better than the BT kit.

Here in Bath anyone who had Infinity before August 2011 are due a letter about replacing the modem, etc in the coming months according to a person at Kelly Communications, the firm who are doing the work for Openreach?
Also we are due to get 80/20 in a few weeks as well.

Wasn't BT, who told me, when I mentioned it to the BT engineer who I had here, denied it, but on leaving said off the record yes it is due in a few weeks, but, just a bit of other work has to done first.

I've never used the 'Kelly's Cowboys' web site to book, always phone,so can't comment on that, but I've always found their engineers willing to talk, etc.

Well if you've heard it from the horses mouth it's looking likely, they did say spring so I'm guessing any time from March 1st onwards.
