BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Ordered infinity and engineer is coming a week on Friday :)

Do they usually use royal mail to deliver the router? Not sure why they don't get the engineer to bring it..

Because the part of BT supplying the FTTC connection and modem is different to the part that'll be your ISP (which supplies the router).

Every time I try and order, it keeps the £130 connection fee, I've tried three or four times now and gone as far as just before the credit checks.

My download speeds seem to have dropped since about Friday.

They have always topped out (4.2-4.4mbs) (on wireless) but just recently I've been getting around 1.8-3.5 (average around 2.8). This is on 2 different laptops (both using wireless).

Speedtest gave me the normal full speed result and a traceroute to bbc.co.uk returned at 25ms.

I've reset the HH a couple of times and will try connecting my laptop directly to it tonight.

Anyone else been having problems?

Edit - This is with supernews and SABnzb btw.

Woman on the phone said I can't use my own router, I presume this is wrong?

Also when will speeds be increasing beyond 40MB (if at all)?

Easiest way to answer that question would be to ask the woman (why?)

Would have been interesting to see the answer. She probably thought you meant the modem. The staff probably won't be aware you can use other modems (routers with built in VDSL), they won't promote the notion anyway.

Yeah fair enough, I did half think this on the phone but then realised it'd be a waste of time.

Will 40Mb customers ever be able to get increased speeds? If so, is there a roll out plan at all?

Well the DrayTek 2850n arrived yesterday, and just set it up :)

A few pics, showing the size comparison against the OR Modem and HH3:

In terms of setting it up; pretty straightforward:

1) http://192.168.1.1/ For the Web Admin Page

2) WAN -> General Setup -> WAN1 -> Enable VLAN

3) Change the VID to 101 - Apply Settings

4) WAN -> Internet Access -> WAN1 Details Page

5) Enter BT Log In login details under PPPoA/PPPoE.

I used [email protected] and just some random password (you don't NEED to enter one, but the router seems to requires something) Apply Settings.

6) WAIT - Several times i thought it hadn't worked, but it was me being inpatient - It needs a good minute to sort itself out and teh connection to be made :P

First impressions are that the wireless is definitely better than the HH3 and there are infinitely (no pun intended :P) more controls and options which I haven't played with yet :)

I seem to have a slight increase in both download and upload speed (although I have bettered both on Speedtest):

After

Im getting 37.6 / 9.36 but didn't take a screen grab and have to wait an hour to do another - buggers, ill update the post later :D

BT are just teasing me, I just received an email with the subject - "Get BT Infinity NOW":
Thank you for registering your interest in BT Infinity.

Great news, you could now experience broadband that is four times faster than the UK's average . To see if you can get BT Infinity , all you have to do is click below.

But using the BT website and BT Wholesale checkers both say I can only get ADSL.
I jumped when I saw the email, as I've been waiting at least 6 months for fibre to go live here (the RFS date is 1st March).
Anyone else had that email and how long after roughly it was until you could order?

Anyone had an engineer turn up and replace their equipment out of the blue?
Had one on Monday do just that, apparently the old equipment isn't compatible with 'new products' which is exciting.
