BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

At this moment in time there really isn't a need for more than 80/20. Your not allowed to host and stuff to make profit anyway on a residential connection.

I just checked local planning applications and not even a mention of a cabinet around here, looks like BT have no plans what so ever to upgrade my cabinet. Looks like i am stuck with this crappy slow internet for a long time yet...

BT/OR don't always need to submit a planning application. Only in certain areas.

The same infrastructure is used for Business Infinity and also for other ISPs that do allow commercial usage.

I know that but only business packages with most ISP's allow you to host servers and stuff that generate an income. Typically they will cost £10-30 more a month than the residential connection as well.

What kinda server would you want to host from home anyway?

You might have decent upload but the peering/routing sucks..(compared to a proper server)

Game server on a home connection with like 20 hops? :)

Seedbox on home connection are you crazy? 20Mbit wouldn't make much of a seedbox.

The rest, fair enough :D

just had my upgrade, was quoted 54 down on the checker (not bothered about upload speed)

noted on my bt under services for broadband it says "upto 76mb download" not "upto 80mb download".

nice to join the 99% brigade.

zomg 10meg higher this morning!

Why does it fluctuate so much? This is the highest but 30 mins ago it tested as 45meg??!?!?"`1

Does it need to settle in for 10 days like adsl?

Guys...

Download speedachieved during the test was - 45 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 12 Mbps-50.98 Mbps .
Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 50.98 Mbps

However, I was predicted to have a line speed of around 64.4mb. Its been 10 days now so should I be calling them?

if so what do I ask?

lauy

I would wait until the 10 days are up and then re-set both the OR modem and BT hub (Let the OR modem re-start backup 1st).

The predicted estimate is just that, a rough guess so it could be more or less.

For me I am about 750 meters from my cabinet so I only have 38 down and 9 up :-( so have to wait out for FTTP on demand.

Guys,

Infinity upgraded last night went from 37/8 to 74/16 wow tested last night and this morning......can't believe the difference it seems to make to even normal browsing. Ping is constant 12ms

20 hops is a bit of an exaggeration. Anyway, extra hops don't necessarily have a negative effect on a connection. My L4D2 server caters mainly to people Europe.

20Mb/s saturated 24/7 can produce almost 6.5TB of ratio buffer per month.
