So I rebooted the router and the modem to try and fix it.

Just tested again and its back at 8mbit but.. it was 30 last night!

Whats happened?

Same things been happening with me mate. I know my speed should be 37ish as it was for a year wit IDNet and has been on and off with BT since migration last week but my speeds now are all over the place.

My speed got my speed increased today, I got my upload speed doubled to 16Mbps but my download speed only increased from 38 to 40Mbps :(

40/10

Ok quick update....on my 80/20 woes

Had engineer visit, what I'm getting now 32/8 is the max the line can support. I'm quite a distance from the exchange and the line is made from aluminum.

I've just bought a Asus RT-N56U to replace my trusty DLINK DIR-655 as I need some of the extra features. After reading some reviews, I'm looking forward to it arriving and hopefully it won't disappoint!

Well my upgrade as with a lot of people has shown the speed increase. I finally got an email yesterday from BT:

"Thanks for your email. I'm sorry to hear of the problems you're having with your broadband speeds. I've checked your line today and can see that although the order to increase your speed completed properly there is still a cap on your line as it appears to have been deemed unstable - the cap would limit your speed in an attempt to increase stability. However, I can't see any errors or an excessive number of disconnections so any instabilities may have cleared up automatically.

As it stands, we can either wait for DLM to uncap your line automatically which will probably take a few days or we can get an engineer out to test your line for errors and request a manual DLM reset if he deems it necessary. The line speed at the minute is sufficient for what the vast majority of people need but if you want an engineer to confirm the line is stable please let me know when you could be available for a visit over the next week or so and I'll book an appointment for you."

Just wondering whether to take them up on the offer of having the engineer come out or not. What do people think?

Wow, it's pretty impressive how fast your connection goes to **** when the modem starts getting a bit warm. Over the last few days around the end of my working day (5-7pm) I've noticed massive SSH lag, and speed tests I could barely get 2-3mbps although upload was fine. Originally blamed the airport extreme, tested the modem directly connected to my computer and it was still terrible.
I heard a lot about these modems overheating but I didn't realise they were that bad, it's not like it's been that warm the last few days! But it's in a cupboard (with the door open today!) and as soon as I took it out, it improved. Thing is quite warm to the touch. Bleugh. There goes my neat cable management.

So, if you see your pings rise steadily, packet loss rise steadily, and massive loss of downstream but your upload is fine, blow into the modem and see if it suddenly gets better

Fibre planned for my cabinet for end of the year.. and, to be honest, that can't come quickly enough..

this should make those of you experiencing 'problems' feel a little better :
