BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I'm using a Netgear WNDR4500 and the log shows me that before every disconnect it says [internet idle timeout] and the disconnects. Then it will come back up a few mins later... If its cos I'm trying to go back online and starts it up or it just starts up auto after a bit I'm not sure.

So odd that the Internet disconnects after idle time... Cant see any setting for anything like that, and unlikely there will be one I suppose?

Not the end of the world cos I've only noticed I've not been connected once, but it's not ideal. I'll see if it happens with the home hub if it continues.

Realised my connection in my router was set to dial on demand and idle every 5 mins, changed to always on now that should fix it!

Yes, as long as you aren't miles from the cab.

FTTC doesn't necessarily affect normal ADSL speeds, although it may and it's unlikely to do any harm.

It will improve your speed if you upgrade to Infinity - which will only be possible if your cabinet is upgraded. Outlying areas for an exchange don't always get FTTC, they sometimes only do to within a certain range (geographical or population).

Thanks, looks like I need to find out where the cabinet is, it may point to whether I could get better speeds when they roll this out. I certainly hope so, even 4-8MB would be nice ;)

I've been up since 7:30AM for my 8AM to 1PM appointment. I'm guessing he's gonna choose to come at 12:30PM or something lol. Thinking about how he's gonna install it for me as my master socket is in the hallway and as I live in a Victorian house, there's no power sockets near there and there's nowhere to place the hub and modem except on the floor. The nearest sockets are in a downstairs bedroom about 2 meters away behind the door.

I would prefer to have the hub and modem in my room upstairs in my bedroom near my computer so I can use an ethernet connection and keep a constant eye on the hub for when I get connection issues. Hopefully he will be able to get that data extension cable installed from the master socket downstairs up the stairs, along the wall edges and through a hole (quite thin) into my room. Can't be along the floor as my pets will chew it up!

Just had the enginner install my fibre, was quoted 61.6 meg initially. His machine said 65 meg down / 20 up and that it is likely to go up a little more over the next few days.

Speed tests see me all over the place and just downloaded something, started out at 5.5mb/s then went all the way down to 1.0mb/s :(

Just had mine installed. Estimate gave me 58D/20U. Engineer's test gave me 80D/20U but speedtests are giving me anything from 32 to 54D. We'll see after 10 days if it stabilises. Still, it's much better than the 5Mbps I was getting earlier with my O2 broadband!

Edit: Ok, it's just slower over the WiFi that's all. Now I'm testing via ethernet cable, I'm getting 74Mbps download easily!

Hmm...might have to look about getting an ethernet cable installed all the way from the downstairs bedroom where the hub is upstairs to my room :(

Considering the noticeable drop in speed I get on WiFi compared to Ethernet, I'm now reading up on homeplugs so I don't have to route a cable and drill holes. Plus it's one less cable for my pets to chew on. What would be a good pair of plugs to keep my speed as close to my LAN speed? Is a 85Mbps adapter fast enough or maybe 200Mbps although that sounds like overkill for my 80Mbps line.

I'm pretty sure BT are throttling uploads. I am streaming to twitch.tv through xsplit and some days it will be fine but yesterday the stream was limited to around 10kbps upstream which quite frankly isn't even watchable. This isn't even p2p either. Will be rather annoyed if it happens on a regular basis.

You won't get the quoted speed from any homeplugs. The best you could expect to get under ideal conditions will be slightly less than half the claimed speed.

I tried a few and eventually gave up and ran a cable instead.

Where did you find that info, was it here?

http://www.coolwebhome.co.uk/fibre/checker.php

I had my doubts about my brothers house being on a cabinet, but it confirms there is one on there although it isn't on the initial rollout plan of FTTC for the area.

No, I'm just going on some web searches which may suggest that there are no cabinets near us, although I suspect that's highly unlikely.

However, that site seems to suggest a 25x speed increase, which would take our 1/2MB up to ~ 40MB. That would be amazing but I also find it really hard to believe tbh.

What do all you FTTC people find the customer service is like? (whether BT or Sky).

Currently I'm on O2 with their old Premium package giving me unlimited downloads and anytime calls for about £30 a month.

I've recently read that I can continue on my plan (even though it's been phased out) with a bit of blagging to customer service and get six months free if they think I am going to leave...not to be sniffed at!

However I have FTTC enabled in my area and I am very keen, the coolwebhome checker that someone linked to says I would be estimated a 3.44 increase, taking me from 10mbps up to 34.4mbps.

I should note that my ADSL speed is estimated to be between 4-5mbps and I double that...I don't know if the same would be true with fibre.

So that sets the scene...my worry is what happens if something goes wrong?

I've only ever had one issue in several years with O2 and they passed me straight through to second line after I explained the issue and it was resolved in 12 hours, amazing service!

What are the fibre providers like if something goes wrong?

Also are you noticing any problems? Spenty is mentioning possible upload throttling...I don't p2p really but I do lots of downloading so I wouldn't want any issues.

The other thing is I use the phone and BB for my business as well, in fact the incoming business line is VOIP so it has to be stable and consistent all the time.

tl;dr - Are BT/Sky any good with customer service on FTTC products or should I just stay with O2 10mbps until they release a FTTC product?
