BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

6 Megabit down is good for an up to 40 Megabit connection? No it's not.

I think you will probably find there is a confusion between bits and bytes.
6 megabits for a 40 megabit connection is about 75k per second. Okay not good but you hardly ever see anyone say 6 megabits more likely 75k per second. Or maybe its just me brought up in the dial up modem age.
If they mean 6 megabytes per second download then it is good as 40 megabit connection divide by 8 equates to 5 megabyte per second.

Hence why I said "Perhaps if you could tell us your connection speed might help."

needs further clarification.

Well my connection has been all over the place lately but just now I've been downloading at the fastest I've ever seen - just a tad over 5200kB/s :)

Will still be onto BT on twitter as they said to get back to them once I had run 3 separate speedtests on their tester in the morning afternoon and evening - hopefully they can yet improve/fix the speeds!

edit - speedtest.net gives this

and the Beta speedtester for >24meg gives:

Although I'm on homeplugs upstairs so can understand why I'm only getting just over 5Mbps!

You're right, you're getting your bits and bytes confused ;) 1 Megabit is equivalent to 128KB/sec (KiloBytes) so 6 Megabit is 768KB/sec (KiloBytes) - I have no idea where you got 75k from.

6 Megabytes per second would mean a 50 Megabit connection roughly. With BT Infinity the 40 megabit connection should be giving you 4500 KiloBytes a second, or 4.4 Megabytes a second (since it's only 38Mbit or so really).

Well I've had nothing but problems with Infinity 2.
Applied online for the free upgrade April 17th, got an email confirming it had been done a few days later.
Speedtest confirmed it hadn't been done:mad:,applied a second time over the phone, still didn't get it, after complaining many times over the weeks, finally yesterday they found the line is capped.
So next week I got yet another engineer coming to finally give me my 56Mb I ordered.(Hopefully)

Taken for four weeks, fourteen phone calls & six engineers to finally sort out the problem.

What about the CEO's problem shooting team (the email address) did they get back to you? If so they should remain in touch until the job is sorted to your satisfaction, this will include (always the final thing to happen) some form of reimbursement, depending on what all it is will help take the edge of the whole sorry matter. Hope so anyway.

DirtyJester: I sent one email last Friday to them, had a reply saying they were looking into it.
On Tuesday had a call to say a search had found a cap on the line, & could they send a engineer to do speed test, etc, & finally remove the cap.

Wondering why the last engineer didn't know about the cap, did get a new modem out of him, but I will chase up some form of reimbursement next week after the speed issue has been sorted.

You should have had a phonecall from someone put in charge of your case. Whenever you sent the email in did you include contact details, customer account info etc and did you receive an automated reply from Ian Livingston shortly after sending your email? Once I was assigned someone they stayed in constant contact with me via email, phone and text messages right up until the problem was resolved to my satisfaction. Keep at them mate until they do.

Finally getting infinity a week on Monday :) I really wanted the upload speed for video calling my wife and my little girl, so this is mega good news for me :)

Apparently estimated is 56 down/15 up, will be interesting to see how close that estimate is.

Got infinity installed a couple days ago and all is good, fast speeds etc etc.

However, my ip address is changing many times a day... Talking 30+ times, so assume the connection is dropping and coming back pretty much instantly.

Is this something that happens the first few weeks of infinity? I know it takes a few weeks to settle the speed, hoping this is something to do with it?

My IP only changes if WAN disconnects or the modem loses sync.

I'm using a Netgear WNDR4500 and the log shows me that before every disconnect it says [internet idle timeout] and the disconnects. Then it will come back up a few mins later... If its cos I'm trying to go back online and starts it up or it just starts up auto after a bit I'm not sure.

So odd that the Internet disconnects after idle time... Cant see any setting for anything like that, and unlikely there will be one I suppose?

Not the end of the world cos I've only noticed I've not been connected once, but it's not ideal. I'll see if it happens with the home hub if it continues.

I'm about 2 miles from the local exchange which is an area for the FTTC roll-out (Alderholt in Dorset, Fordingbridge exchange). Currently ADSL speeds are just under 2MB down. Do you think this FTTC roll-out will improve the speeds for those in the outer areas like me? Is core infrastructure at the exchange altered which may improve it for those of us further out?

Yes, as long as you aren't miles from the cab.

FTTC doesn't necessarily affect normal ADSL speeds, although it may and it's unlikely to do any harm.

It will improve your speed if you upgrade to Infinity - which will only be possible if your cabinet is upgraded. Outlying areas for an exchange don't always get FTTC, they sometimes only do to within a certain range (geographical or population).

Nothing will change, all they're doing is blowing fibre down existing tubes that are occupied by the copper. Its not replacing the copper with fibre, so unless you order another product based on FTTC its likely to be much the same speeds.
