BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Bumped in to a BT engineer where I work.

(Think theres a nest of them tucked away somewhere)

I asked him about my particular setup requirements.... what he said is that it is possible, but may not be possible to do it in one go...

Guess I'l find out on wednesday.

When he calls you just before unplugging your internet explain your situation to him.

Tell him to come take a look first before unplugging maybe ;).

BT are going to be increasing FTTC speeds next year up to a possible 80/20Mbps. It will probably only benefit people who are close to their cabinet, under 500m I'd guess.

I'm around 400m away and the engineer who installed Infinity said my line was capable of 60/20Mbps.

That'll be me then. :) Sounds great, 'was expecting a boost but not so soon. I know they're planning to cover most of the country with VDSL in a few years, would've thought they'd focus on that. I'm guessing Virgin's 100Mb service is pushing them a bit.

Thing is it was a guess on the engineers part, as current BT VDSL line profile of 8c is limited to 50Mbit.

It wasn't a guess he used the line monitor tool they've got and I saw the screen readout myself, the exact figure was something like 63/19.9Mbps.

The tool also displays the current sync speed as a percentage of what the line is actually capable of, and mine was only running at something like 60% which ties in with it being able to support around 63Mbps.

When the engineer came to fix my connection yesterday it showed my line could handle 73meg+ on the current equipment installed. Quite reassuring to know that for future use tbh.

Without me reading the whole thread....can anyone tell me are torrents throttled all the time or only peak times?

Thanks

Same here tbh, I get a drop to about 2.5-3 MB/s during peak times, and that's pretty impressive considering it is peak time.

This drop is only for torrent speeds right?

General browsing will still see full speeds, even during simultaneos torrenting and browsing?
Yep, normal downloads will see the full 4.5-5 MB/s that one'd expect from Infinity at all times, provided that the server can supply that speed and there aren't any other management rules in place from BT for the specific host.

Yeah opethdisciple, like SeeKified mentioned only a drop in torrent speeds. Everything else still runs at full speed during peak times :)

Nah, it was the results from his JDSU - would love one of those to play with.

The engineer showed me the results for my line too, I posted them on here somewhere. Although they may be testing at higher frequencies now so the results might be outdated.

Yeah I'm on Be, but really wanna change now over the years my speed's dropped from a whole 23Mb to 17Mb now but there's still no bloody Infinity in my area, which is annoying cos I know 1 guy that lives 3 roads from/ 2 blocks and he has it! Argh
