BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

So you're saying FTTP latency should be 1ms? Why?

I guess a collection of empirical and anecdotal evidence - using FTTH in Sweden, and watching the rollout of the NBN in Australia and frequently requesting traceroutes to random locations (as in previous reply).

At a minimum, I'd expect it to be as good as VDSL2.

I've had a hunt around for some documentation from a vendor to support this position but so far, no luck.

I suspect what we're actually seeing is mostly the influence of BT's terrible routing, with quite a low first hop of probably 3-4ms.

It's a common misconception that FTTP is going to be significantly lower in latency than copper based alternatives such as xDSL.

Traffic still has to go through exchange routers and each network hop will involve converting light back into electrical impulses.

That's before we open the can of worms that is the speed of light and the refractive index of fibre optic.

Fibre optic can shift significant amounts of bandwidth but when measuring latency across such a complex network as the net it's never going to be significantly different than copper.

There is no difference in latency between copper on fibre, at least not within a whole ms.

Perhaps, but if we're speaking specifically about VDSL2 vs GPON, I've never seen VDSL2 below 5ms to the first hop, but it's pretty common to get 1ms with GPON.

I would love to be shown otherwise, though (re VDSL2!)

Its been down to 5ms on other servers, depends which one I choose. The installer said they are trialling 250meg on employees at the moment and it has the ability to go up to 500 on the fibre loop.

Cool - would you mind doing a tracert to bbc.co.uk and posting the results here?

ahhh, that's better :)

Looks like my holding date is going to get put back again, emailed the open reach support email (that someone linked in here - thanks!!).

Said that its down to go active by end of Feb 2013 (holding date is currently end dec 2012) but thats only if they don't hit delays.

SO I'll probably be lucky to have it by summer 2013, I'd imagine they'll use a bit of snow as an excuse to delay it.

That's super fast. Just done a quick test, 31mb/s DL, 14mb/s UL with 26ms Ping.

My connection tends to float between 20mb/s - 38mb/s DL.

Using infinity which we've had for around 18 months I think. Our phone line from the telegraph pole to the house could do with being replaced though. It's been up 35+ years. Starting to 'sag' now.

Just sent a nice email to my local MP to enquire if he has any powers to reach out to BT and 'influence' them to actually make plans to roll out FTTx products to my area!

I found out that I am on one of the top 25-30 (can't remember which) busiest telephone exchanges! There is plenty of market to cover in my town and revenue BT/resellers can gain by deploying fibre here. We do have Virgin but it covers about 60-70% (totally rough made up figure) of my town. BT could steal a lot of the market and the areas were we don't have Fibre at all like where I am!

Yet for some reason there are zero plans, nothing whatsoever.. Go BT!

Hopefully look to hearing something half-positive (I doubt it) from my MP.. But it was worth a shot..

Still getting rather annoying buffeirng on my BT Infinity connection when using Iplayer and TVCatchup. Everything else works fine and I can happily download at 3mb/s or more. What gives?

Unfortunately anyone outside of london will still go through a bunch equipment that adds significant ms to your ping. I'd be very happy with 15ms to london from Scotland.

Outside of London. :D

BT Infinity.

append "select areas" then. :p

I don't currently have a BT line, but when I did, the majority of the latency was made up over 2 hops, the first (which could possibly be mitigated by FTTP, maybe) and generally one somewhere between the mancs and the southerners.

Goddamit you people are going to alter the average and make our measly FTTC look slow!
Time to go and start petitioning to get FTTP...

You'll be able to get FTTP sometime next year if you're willing to swallow a somewhat large installation fee.
