BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

The engineer told me also not to turn off my equipment for the next 3 days, he even told me to leave it on 24/7...

BT FON seems to be off on the home hub by default.... I hope so.

I would go here www.bt.com/btfon and click on "Check the status of your BT FON account" and enter your details. From what I've read the router comes with FON disabled but it turns itself on after a few days. I just opted out the first day by going to the link I posted.

What exchange are you on? By the looks of things the amount of people connected to the exchange can make a big difference at peak times..

I don't know if it's as simple as that, my exchange serves 36,086 residential premises and 1,783 non-residential premises and I get the full 38meg 24/7. The only time I've had a slight slow down was when the Royal wedding was on.

Thanks, I opted out.

The BT email address they created for me, do I need to access it for anything?

What exchange u on Yerman?

I'm on the Chesterfield exchange. The engineer that installed mine said there had been a massive uptake of FTTC here compared to other areas so I'm surprised I get such good speeds consistently.

Just to add about the throttling on torrents;

When I first got my line installed I was :( to see torrents throttle to around 120kb/s during peak hours. I've just set some off now (peak) and am seeing 3mb/s - which is not the full speed of the connection.. but it's not all that :( either

Hmm

What I previously thought was just low bandwidth streams, was actually my connection being not fast enough.

Im currently streaming the europa final on my pc and its lag free!

Yes I saw the torrent throttle hit. It affected me at exactly 4.07pm, however I managed to get what I wanted before that at 2.6MB/s!

Your downloading torrents at 3mb/s off-peak and your sad why? Thats pretty damn impressive for torrents.

Does every one else leave their equipment on 24/7?
Yes, With Be the router was always on, as now with FTTC the router and modem is always on.

Think the last time it was off was when i went on holiday.

Turning off the modem every night may make the DLM think you have an unstable line and slow you down.... ;)

I am thinking of finding another ISP.

I just moaned to my current >unamed< isp that my 11mbit was insufficient and that i want to downgrade to a cheaper package because i might as well. So i did so, forced me in to a new 12 month contract. Only for it to sync at 9mbit, so i ask them to do a line test and they come back and say there is fault. Next day i receive an email, line fault has been fixed. So all excited i go to check the sync speed, 6mbit :((

Now i am stuck in a new 12 month contract with no cancel option at 6mbit. Ridiculous.

So i have been considering moving to fttc and trying to get out of this bs. But adsl24 is not an option because you can not move house with it. Is that the same for every fttc supplier?

I think i might be stuck with 6mbit.

lesson of the story: never complain to your isp about the speed of your connection or you might find that a few days later you are on half the speed. "line length excuse" zero recourse, welcome to 2001.

anyone tried eclipse? http://www.eclipse.net.uk/fibre-broadband/product-and-pricing/product-and-pricing

You guys and your fast internets.

My downloads peak at 400kb/s. AOL claim 8mbps but due to line quality (I think) I won't ever be getting that :(

Would you say your internal wiring is old?

What I did with my house a long time ago, was remove the ring wire from all the telephone sockets.

Its litterally removing one wire out of the socket.

My speeds doubled after that.

If you do try to remove the ring wire, please remove the right one, or you wont have any internet or phones at all!

Check on the internet.

posting speed test results without router stats is completely pointless. we need some context here. (although maybe not in this thread :p)

BT Infinity has been installed!

Im seeing download speeds of 4.2MB/s from Nvidia download site.

Here was my speed before:
