BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

So made the step from Be* to this, ordered yesterday and their sending someone out next Thurs.

Didn't really want to leave Be*, offered 6months half price.. but only if I take out a new 18month contract.

Expected speeds of 28.9 / 6.4, so let's see :)

You should always do or the line will sync to slower speeds as ISP's think your line is faulty as when you turn off it shows as line error or something that's what BE told me and it's true because i used to turn mine off every night getting slow speed but since leaving on 24/7 it always hits cap since.(the engineer who visited even said the same thing)

I am thinking of leaving BE for this too as they are taking ages to get fibre yet it says my line would ger 32/8 estimate which is brilliant for me.

Ok, I'v only been with BT for 1 days so far.... but all my fears where misplaced.

Speeds are great. The upload speed has made a big difference to my online gaming experience.

The only bad thing is the torrent capping.... but I thought to my self I dont do that much anymore, other than the odd TV program so its not a big issue.

The home hub is easy to configure... slightly less advanced features than what I was hopping for (its basic) but its good.

No issues so far. Engineer who came round was very porfessional and did a very good thorough job.

What speeds do you get with well-seeded torrents? I still get around 2-2.5 MB/s usually during peaktimes, but it's been a fair few weeks since I downloaded anything. :)

Just use Expat Shield at peak times when the cap hits.

Or get a megashares/newsgroup

No download manager :)

Only downloaded a tv episode yesterday it was 1.45Gb and took about 20mins, going around 2MB/s....

Seems the torrent cap comes in at around 4.07pm

About the same as what I got at about 5pm

Just taken now at 7pm

You can turn the router off and it won't effect your sync, the modem shouldn't be turned on and off all the time though. Saying that FTTC DLM is pretty good and reacts a lot faster than DSL.

Personaly I leave both router/modem on, too inconvenient to keep switching on and off with the diff times it's used by diff people.

For the modem lead I've been using this since last year, just CAT5e with RJ11 plugs, it's a bit longer than needed though so I'm going to get a crimper and make my own.

I'm planning to migrate from sky to bt infinity and was wondering if bt throttle the download speed when the limit is reached and at peak times?

Everything is working splendidly.

The only throttling that happens is on p2p (bittorrent) traffic during peak times, which is basically 4pm-12am on weekdays and something like 9am-12am weekends.

So basically almost all the time. But it is ok to torrent after 12am.

As someone pointedo out above, there are ways round the throttling, but I dont download that much so its not something im concerned about at present.

On the flip side the throttling is there to maintain the quality of your service, so using stuff like vpn connections is a little bit unsporting! :p

Iv said it before but im going to say it again, getting Infinity has definitely upgraded my online gaming experience!

Everything is real time and no lag. (BC2 anyway)
