BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

My sync speed has gradually dropped over time since February from 102Mbps to 82Mbps is this just more people near me being enabled? Obviously this hasn't really affected me yet but if it keeps dropping more and more it's going to get annoying :p

Sync speeds can change a bit based on time of year due to differing background levels of interference - things like streetlights and christmas lighting _can_ affect the quality of the line to which are on more at this time of year. Probably the increased uptake and BT's ongoing work at the moment rolling out infrastructure upgrades is taking its toll as well.

Crosstalk.

Without a doubt I'd reccomend it over VM. Get Sky Fibre if you can though.

I'm upgrading the parents house, hopefully early next year, when it gets installed. Any idea how the sky network compares with bt? I'm aware that the DLM is done at the cab level, but still a tad worried about the pings on sky, I suppose.

getting ****ed off with bt now wtf i mean i have been connected fine for over 27 days full 7999 sync with fastpath now i lost sync for some reason lastnight and now i'm on 74 meg interleaving
maxrate of 88

bt line profile says i'm on 77.43

i thought you would only drop in speed if you had many disconnections

now i have to wait about another 3 weeks for it to return to full speed and fastpath

^ Oh dear, you've lost a couple of megabits of throughput!

Latency should be better.

and double the ping...i play games online most so ping to me is more important

do you understand what i was saying BT automatic system is pants one disconnect and you lost your fasthpath and 6meg or some sort
this is not the first time this has happened i had to wait 3 weeks for interleaving to be switched off and fastpath back on and back to full speed again

its not like my line is dropping constantly

75meg dl speeds max 64 now

but oh dear why should i bother i only pay for the service

BT's blip logic does not work :( and they seem completely oblivious to it. That said from my experience it should improve back to normal in about 5-6 days hopefully not 3 weeks.

i know mate stupid dont shut down the modem just leave it your speed will go back up
but it will take 2 weeks plus

past few times mine has taken the same time to go back up 2-3weeks

My cabinet has now gone live and I can order now from either BT or Sky! I've got my MAC code ready to go, but please could somebody let me know why everyone generally recommends Sky on here?

Is it just because of the P2P management from BT?

I don't use torrent software, but I've heard that some other software does. My main uses are:

General downloads, (not through torrents)
Steam downloads
Multiplayer gaming
Streaming, (Youtube, film trailers, On Demand services from Sky etc.)
PS3 & Xbox 360 general downloads, (general services, demos etc. not so much for multiplayer)

I've already got Sky TV with movies using a 1TB box and there doesn't seem to be any discount to go with Sky, but BT are offering a free Youview box, (which we could use in another room) and the £5 a month that you normally have to pay for TV Essentials is being included for a year at the moment.

The price difference between Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro and BT Infinty 2 would be roughly the same for me because caller display is free with Sky and we pay for it with BT, so that makes the £4 difference in price for Sky less than a pound.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as to why Sky is recommended when I can get free stuff on offer with BT. I just want to make the right decision on an 18 month contract...

Thanks! :)

so just ordered BT 73/19mb package as i'm fed up with VM throttling :( have to wait till jan 22nd before an engineer is available though :( boooooo

was quoted 63 and 20mb speeds, how good are these estimates, a friend in england says he was told he would get about the same and he gets 59/19...if i get that i'll be a happy bunny. from what i can see my distance via googe maps along the roads is about 850/900m from the exchange. im sure there is a cabinet one at the bottom of my road tho :\ but can find any others using searches and such.

apparently my exchange is "SWSKJ" and cabinet P4....so with FTTC, that would be fiber between the exchange and cabinet yea? then just copper from the small cab up to my house? any way of finding out where this cab is apart from taking a stroll around the block and looking at the numbers on the sides?

just want to see how close I am as i know the speed decreases with distance. so i'm hoping its the one i can see from my window so only about 100m xD also pings? hope they are good too :)

Hey people.

So I had a BT engineer out the other day as my speeds had gone from 37Mbs on install to 30Mbs over about, well I can't remember when I got it installed. Maybe 9 months ago? I also had them out because of the HTTPS problem I have mentioned before in this thread. There's a 17 page thread on BTs forums but they are not acknowledging the problem.

The BT engineer replaced the modem and reset the line again so I'm back in my 10 day period thing. However he did the line reset after installing the modem. Should I restart the modem to resync?

He said he was on the phone to BT engineers and they said it might be my virus guard causing the HTTPS blocks but with multiple devices in the house he and I knew this wasn't the problem. So he said all I can do is ring BT wholesale as it's a problem there end. Awesome...

Is any ISP offering channel bonding for either FTTC or FTTP products? Bonding is useful for downloads, but many applications using multiple threads can take advantage of normal load balancing and bonding isn't necessarily needed.

Upload however is a different matter. I'm specifically thinking of things like remote desktop sessions, video conferencing etc.
