BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

@those with the HTTPS issue.

I've just been reading some of the posts on the BT Care forums, and it looks like either a routing issue or a DNS issue - don't forget, a web page will make reference to hostnames rather than IP addresses within its content.

Why not try telling your PCs and other devices to use either OpenDNS or Google for DNS service? It could be that the BT DNS is returning addresses with routing issues.

Google
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

OpenDNS
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Hope this helps.

Not seen any HTTPS issues so far here (gmail works fine on HTTPS for me).

Using the latest (3b?) Infinity modem with an Asus RT-N66U flashed to 260.21 merlin FW tho not sure if the modem/router has any implications on the HTTPS issue but pretty much everyone I know affected by it are using the homehub + older infinity modem.

I am using the home hub 3 and the standard modem that the engineer installed at the end of September.

ECI model: B focus V-2FUb/r Rev .8
ECI cat no: 0N316150

Date of manufacture: 08/2012

I do not know if this helps at all...

@Rroff

I've read on the BT Care forums that people temporarily fix this issue by rebooting the modem and sometimes the router too. This leads me to believe that they pick up a different IP address and therefore their traffic gets routed differently.

I also read somewhere that the modem actually has a firewall built into it and can also actually be used as a router if configured correctly. If this is so, it could be that even in "dumb mode" the firewall might still be active and interfering with traffic.

EDIT:

The modem I referred to is the Huawei HG612.

The BT speedtester just worked for the first time for me, I always had an error before.

Download speed achieved during the test was - 74.08 Mbps
IP Profile for your line is - 77.43 Mbps

Upload speed achieved during the test was - 18.42Mbps
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 20 Mbps

Anyone know any good settings to bypass throttling with utorrent or Vuze? Managed to find a way prior to restoring the laptop, now I've loss all settings etc and only getting the crappy 10-20kbs compared to previous 8-10mb.

if you find some settings that avoid throttling, repost them :p
i tried settings reccomended here and none worked and was slow even when not throttled.

You need to use SOCKS or VPN.

How does estimating your speeds work? I was hoping I'd get good speed with BTI since I get almost max speed on ADSL2+ (22dB down attenuation etc), but I've learnt that these speeds are not related at all unfortunately. BT estimates I'd get 25Mb down and 5.4Mb up which seems incredibly low.

An increase of only 4Mb down and 3Mb up is probably not even worth the switch from ADSL2+ :/

Mate I didn't use anything like a VPN to get full speeds on torrents.

I could get anything over 8mb regardless of the time of day. I just forgot the settings I previously used on Vuze (twice as good as utorrent).

"Connection"
> Click "Randomize port each start", ensure all four boxes here are ticked.

"BitTorrent"
> "Basic BitTorrent Features" - ticked except "Enable Bandwidth Management"
> "Protocol Encryption" - Outgoing: Forced. Allow incoming legacy connections: Ticked.

"Advanced"
> "bt.transp_disposition" - increase to 255 and click "Set"
> "net.max_halfopen" - ensure this is set to 100

still have problems have Enable Bandwidth Management ticked

i also have

enable dht network
enable dht for ner torrents
enable local peer discovery
enable peer exchange
limit local peer bandwith

all these unticked

btw the throttling all depending on bt network activity i never seem to upload much dunno why 200kbps max thinks it where i use private trackers
everyone is a seedbox

It's best to start your downloads late at night 10pm or so
