BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

oh I see. No I always use the subnet 192.168.0.x I'll try it again tomorrow, too tired to dig out the extra ethernet cable again lol

OK - do as I suggested and log directly into the modem and change its IP to 192.168.0.1, then connect it to your LAN somehow using the LAN2 port (router/switch etc).

Then you should be golden :)

tried what you suggested, changed my computers IP to 192.168.1.2
Also tried connecting the LAN2 on the modem to the router, and changing the routers subnet to 192.168.1.x
I can't seem to get any kind of response from the modem, so my guess is that its running a locked firmware. Oh well...

If its the latest engineer supplied modem rather than an earlier unlocked one then you won't get a response on LAN2 without doing some hardware modification to the modem :(

overnight quality graph looks pretty much perfect (IP addressed changed last night when I was fiddling around, trying to access the modem)

The FTTC "engineer" will usually come with the latest VDSL modem they are using pre-configured to run in modem mode and you usually get the HH3 sent a few days before (engineer will usually have spares if you didn't get it).

Not trolling you or anything, but surely if Openreach are CP neutral, then why are they carrying the BT retail provided router and not the routers that Sky/PlusNet/Zen/Aquiss supply their customers?..

As far as I was aware, Openreach were part of BT. They have BT plastered all over their vans...

Edit: Yeah I thought so. It's part of their logo. That will be why they carry BT equipment, like the Homehub

Not sure why my upload is as slow as it is. Speedtest.net only reports 16mb upload, as opposed to the 18-19 that most people seem to get

The TBB speedtest has never worked properly for me (and others I know) and still doesn't. It just reports really inaccurate download speeds all the time.

EDIT -

On my third attempt it gave realistic results.

In regards to Infinity, what determines whether you get 76Mbps or 38Mbps ... is that based on your exchange/cabinet's ability or how much you're willing to pay per month kind of thing?

This is where it all falls apart as ostensibly the VDSL modem itself is vendor neutral and the router your supposed to get from the appropriate ISP... however it quite regularly happens the HH3 never turns up in the post so the OpenReach engineer has to keep a supply of spares in the van to get people up and running :S

I had Infinity installed today - 54.5mbps down and 8.5mbps up.

While not as good as some people here it's much better than my old 2mbps/0.5mbps and also better than the 45mbps estimate that they gave me. So I'm happy with that.

Had a real nightmare with the install today.

I noticed our line was cracking and making noise this week, which is not what you want when you're having internet put it. I proceeded with the order on the presumption that the engineer could fix this.

So, after a 3 week wait for the 8am-1pm booking.. after several texts to confirm the appointment throughout the week.. the engineer no showed!

I rang at 2pm to find out what was going on to be told, "problem at the cab, you should have been notified".. I was fuming, as I'd taken the day off work. They agreed to give me a 1 month free service as a gesture of goodwill.

So then I called to log the original voice fault, thinking "as long as they can fix it before the next install date, at least I'll have piece of mind" only to be told "system is busy.. call back later". Again, fuming

By a stroke of luck the engineer meant to be attending rang me and said he was running late and that it was all still as planned, albeit late!

Anyway.. despite the residual line problem the engineer just left. BT wholesale checker predicted 53.3 down, 15.7 up...

Synced at 66431 down, 19496 up although there is a voice fault on the line (very badly crack and pop), so I'm hoping to see a better speed if they can fix this soon.

pretty good for 50meg internet haha

had steam idling and youtube playing a 720p vid at the time too, if they affect the results

its not completely reliable though, when it doesnt want to work properly i get things like this

that happens at least once a week tbh usually around 6-10pm (peak usage maybe?)

The fault may well be on the E-side so fixing it will make no difference to FTTC.

what's "E-side" ? When I had my infinity installed, I heard the engineer talking to someone on the phone, who was at the cabinet, mentioning E-side and D-side. What does that mean?
