BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

what's "E-side" ? When I had my infinity installed, I heard the engineer talking to someone on the phone, who was at the cabinet, mentioning E-side and D-side. What does that mean?

Layman's terms...

E side is the cabling/fibre between the exchange and PCP

D side is copper between PCP and DP

Replace the front of the master socket thats about it - they do some diagnostic checks to make sure the line is working/see what potential sync is, etc. then setup the modem/HH3 and make sure you have working internet then depending on if you want it or not they will do a short demo/show you through getting it working on a laptop/PC.

I did everything for the engineer :D

I'd already installed the Echolife modem, taken off the front of the master socket and had a screwdriver to hand.

The engineer handed me the new part of the master socket and a front faceplate for the phone and I screwed it all in and the modem achieved sync.

He didn't plug a machine in to the line, just offered me a spare modem (also Echolife) and was on his way. Pity he couldn't fix the fault because I've had to disconnect the modem as if the house phone is called or picked up the SNR margin drops down to minus figures and the sync is lost.

I didn't want the DLM / BRAS profile to get screwed up, so I've logged a voice fault to be fixed next Friday and will plug it all back in once its done and dusted.

It's agonising to taste such awesome speed and know I can't truly use it for a week :(

From what I saw the connection was rock solid at my sync speeds, although I do think there's room for improvement if the crack and pop is eliminated.

In simple terms, the E-side is the wire from the exchange to the cab, and D-side is the wire from the cab to your house.

Oh for the love of god!!!

Holding date put back AGAIN, now to June 2013, what the hell is the problem? EVERY other exchange in Aberdeen is now taking orders....apart from the exchange I'm on, its now gone Sept 12>Dec 12> Feb 13> March 13> June 13.

They can't honestly suggest that the 3 days of snow we've had this year is enough to put it back another 3 months?

Anyone higher up that's not a computer I can contact to see what's going on?

Lucky you my local exchange went from 2013 to 2014 but they are doing the tiny village 3miles away this year

BT doing my head in this past week. The DNS servers are just taking the pee every night. Its practically unusable from about 6pm till 9pm.

Just been on live chat and they said 'oh dns is automatic and we cant do anything about it'
*sigh*

Hey guys, I've got a little bit of a predicament, I'm not sure what is going on and was wondering if you could help me out on this small issue.

I live in the post code area of WA8 4XW and I did a check last night and apparently my area is able to get BT Infinity 73/20, so I'm currently at University so I rang my mother, told her to order it and so on, as they will be probably more than likely be back logged with orders, so the sooner we get it booked, the better, that has been booked for March 12th, which is all well and good.

I told my friend as he's currently looking into switching ISPs either to Virgin or BT, so I told him the good news, but he did a check and he's not able to get BT Until June the 30th, but I'm able to get it now, we both live in the same Town, but he's about 20 minutes away, so I'm a little confused. Could this be a glitch in the system or is it only my part of town that's activated or whatever?

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

FTTC availability depends on having both the street cabinet your line is connected to and the exchange enabled for fiber - most towns have 20-100 cabinets and usually they stagger doing the cabinets over a few months. Some due to things like planning permission, physical space, etc. might not be suited to FTTC or need special work that won't be done as part of the original roll out.

Ah okay, thanks a lot, and thank you for the fast response, that helps clear things up!

Playing silly buggers this morning, lost over 10mb on my down and my upload has been halved. Losing the odd ping on otherwise rock solid connections.

Of course, nothing list on BT's service status site... Been solid for about a month, guess we're due another blip. Boo.

If you're using Android and rooted, it's possible to change the DNS on tablets and phones.

The HH3 wireless started having loads of random problems for me, such as refusing to give wireless devices no internet access, or even crashing (wired connections was still fine oddly). Replaced it with the Asus RT-N53 and been rock solid stable since. Took me a damn while to figure out why it wouldn't connect to the VDSL modem though, then I realised I had to type something random in the passworld section...
