BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Just had confirmation that I can get FTTC the middle of next month, Need to decide now which provider to go with. Tempted with Plusnet or Sky, But I plan on putting in a RT-N56U to replace any generic router from them. I am more thinking Plusnet as they seem to be the better provider.

New cabinets have been in around here for a while now, BT Engineers have been running cables into them all week.

Yet the Wholesale checker is quoting December 2013 for activation :(

We're down as December 2013 as well. I'm pretty sure I saw some BT guys running cables the other week. Hopefully it means we'll be getting fibre soon.

Still no sign of my local exchange even being listed in rollout plans :(

Strangely a local village with 4 times less population is getting FTTC!?

I just installed an Airport Express on BT Infinity 2! I'm so glad as I can now stream audio wirelessly at the same time!

Question regarding the data cable extension option that is available with the FTTC installs. Does this go between the master socket and the modem or between the modem and router?

My master socket is in the hall and there isn't room for a router (my current setup has my ADSL2 router running off one of the extensions) and having the modem in the hall wouldn't be ideal either.

Also when they monkey around with the master socket do they do anything with any extensions which are wired to it, i.e. if they have to disconnect them then do they reconnect them again afterwards?

I had the bloke convert one of my internal extensions to a dedicated DSL socket as there is no power anywhere near my master socket (clever Taylor Wimpey Builders!!!).

Works a treat!! Just means I can't plug a phone into the new socket, on the plus side I needed one less filter!! :)

A chap at BT has told me that after the FTTC cabinet goes in and the Openreach engineer configures it ready, they are then scheduled to come back out the cabinet and test each line individually to see if it can support fibre. They say I won't be able to order it until that line to line check is complete

Does anyone know how many weeks after the cab goes in this usually takes?

Well my CAB went live late December (i think just before the Crimbo Holidays) and BT phoned me (as I had pre-requested a call on availability) on 2nd Jan to say it's live and would I like to move from Virgin 'National' to BT Infinity. :)

Nope, there is seperate terminals for phone & dsl extensions on rear of faceplate.

I have a dedicated dsl line for the modem & another line for all phone extension around the house.

Bull.

Well I don't know about live, but my cabinet just had an FTTC cabinet installed right across the way from it about four days ago. Hopefully, it won't take too long to have it powered up and ready to go. If it's live before end of May (date given by NGA Enquiries) I'll be happy.

Fortuitously, my O2 contract recently came to an end also. :D

Question: does any ISP offer FTTC over a data-only line (i.e. offer cheaper line rental)? I know at least one ADSL ISP was doing it.

My Infinity gets installed on Wednesday afternoon, can't wait to be finally off this 3mb line and onto 60Mb.

Bought a Asus RT-N66U to replace the HH3 which should come tomorrow, is it worth flashing the asus with Tomato firmware when i get it tomorrow? or is the stock good enough?

I'm using the latest Merlin FW on mine which is good if you want stability and performance, Tomato or DD-WRT better if you want more features. Stock is OK but I had a couple of issues with large numbers of connections flooding it out which doesn't happen with the Merlin FW.

Just got mine installed by a nice openreach guy, well pleased with it after being on 5.5mb ADSL for 7 years. just grabbing a film now and downloading at 5.5mb/s. 4.43gb film in 19 mins so sexy.

How is everyone finding their connection as of lately?

I've got to say ever since I opted to renew my contract and go for the truly unlimited service Option 2 on Infinity my internet has been truly appaling over the past couple of weeks, especially in the evenings. Sites will just timeout, downloads will be a measly 0.4 mb/s or so.

Just ran a speedtest and it came back with this:

Anyone got any ideas or is it just BT messing around?
