BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Ok, bit the bullet and started the process to remove to BT Infinity 2 from BE. The line speed predictor thinks I'll get ~57mbps, but also says I'll get ~6mbps for ADSL2 where I get ~11mbps so who knows what the real figure will be.

I've obtained my MAC code from BE who also put a cancel on my account for 18th April. I've then gone through the BT ordering process and given this to them. BT have given me an install date of 2nd April (could have had it earlier but that's when I'm available). From anyone who has gone through this before do I need to inform BE that the actual cession of their service will be 2nd April rather than the 18th or will that be dealt with automatically via the MAC code?

Also what are the opinions and recommendations on replacing the Home Hub? I've heard reasonable things about the Asus routers but have personally only used Netgear ADSL ones ...?

I went through just the same last week, quite painless. I spoke to Be a couple of times to keep them informed anyway, once you've got the cancellation date and MAC you can migrate away at any time, but will have to pay another months rental if it falls within your cancellation period. I knew that, and didn't mind at all, like others I've only been paying £12 for several years for the full package, so they can have an extra month from me with pleasure for the great service I've had.

On the day of migration I had an automated email from them to tell me the service had been removed, I rang to confirm I'd migrated away. Then I had a bill reminder, which had added some extra amount, so I rang and they immediately corrected it, at the same time I asked when I should cancel the DD, and we decided it would easier to pay the final bill by CC over the phone there and then, and they cancelled DD at the same time.

Each time I rang I was talking to someone straight away who was fully up to date and knew what to do.

The BT HomeHub didn't suit my needs, so I swapped it for the Asus RTN66U that I was using with Be (had my ADSL modem in bridge mode with Be), much more capable router, and a bonus is that you can sign up to the BT WiFi thing and because you are not using the HH, your own WiFi doesn't get shared with others, well that can't be helped.

hrm, i've got a BT engineer coming tomorrow to install Infinity. My master socket is in a cupboard, but there's no power socket in there - I'm assuming BT won't wire me one? And i will have to use the socket outside and run the router cable under the carpet?

Having big problems with DNS on infinity again, some serious outages recently.
Just wish they would let you change it on the damn hub!

Just noticed my usage stats too, "Your average monthly usage is 649.31 GB."

I had summut similar, My master socket is in the hallway with no power anywhere near!. The Engineer just converted another socket near a power socket into a DSL only socket... worked no probs!! :)

After being told by Openreach that my cabinet wasn't financially viable to upgrade, they seem to have had a change of heart. A lovely new FTTC cabinet has appeared and within a day the openreach engineers were there connecting it up to the existing cabinet. Now I just have to wait for BT to say I can order it!

Yup, best thing ever! downloaded so much since friday!

Also i get the full upload speed, have tested by uploading somefiles and goes at 17Mb.

LOL I did the very same thing hehe :)
What is the very best thing for me since going from ADSL2 5.5 line to FTTC is I can still game and download without noticing any lag issues what so ever.

Now I got a bit of a dilemma, the home hub 3 is terrible for wifi signal. I live in a small flat and my HB3 is right next to the living room wall (bedroom right next door) walls are plasterboard and all I get on my WDTV box is 1 bar from the HB3. Still thinking of buying a better router, possibly the N66U but don't want to lose my full speed and it resync (catch back up to full speed after so many hours/days) It's so annoying the this still happens, I think it should be that once so many hours/day or weeks have gone by at a solid throttle from the cab it should lock at that speed and not need to resync back up.

Anyone know how long it would take to gain the full speed back if I do choose to buy that N66U.

just ordered my employee infinity, was meant to wait for an invitation to upgrade my service but i am very impatient and got it pushed through. so now the order is all processed and my engineer is booked for the 2nd of april, happy days!

You should be fine as long as you leave the modem on and connected to the dsl socket. Swapping your router shouldn't cause you any issues.

I love this!! :)

I'm uploading all my music (about 16,000 songs) to Google Music so I can access them on my Nex7 and Nex4.

Would have taken me about a year maybe 2 at my old speed Virgin gave me!! I'm currently at about 50% uploaded and it's only been going for 5 hours!! :D

Just had mine installed a short while ago. Had to stick with TalkTalk but so far so good :)

Nope just sits there "Connecting..." on my BT FTTC connection for me, dns is resolving OK, traceroute is blackholing after telehouse - works fine using my vodafone (mobile) or eclipse (ADSL) connections or VPNing via my dedicated server. Probably yet another routing/proxy screwup on BT's end...
