BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Hmm two days ago my hub needed to be restarted in order to connect to the internet.

I thought things where running alittle slow so I did a speed test to find I am only getting 69mbps... when before I was getting 75mbps. Not a huge difference but a difference enough for me to consider turning modem off and on again...

The man from BT comes tommorrow. BT are saying up to 70mb, which will be an improvement over the 1mb I get now! Can't wait.

@CSA

BT's estimates are pretty conservative, but I believe that conservatism reduces as you get further from the cabinet. For example, according to this page

VDSL2 deteriorates quickly from a theoretical maximum of 250 Mbit/s at source to 100 Mbit/s at 0.5 km (1,600 ft) and 50 Mbit/s at 1 km (3,300 ft), but degrades at a much slower rate from there, and outperforms VDSL. Starting from 1.6 km (1 mi) its performance is equal to ADSL2+.

I'm 320M from my cabinet by road, so I should get the full 76Mb/s, however the ADSL checker estimates 59.1Mb/s, a difference of 16Mb/s. The further you are away from the cabinet, the smaller this difference will be as the estimate and the limits of VDSL2 start to converge.

thanks, im estimating about 800 or maybe 900ft from the cab

EDIT: according to google its 0.4miles so thats 640'ish feet,i reckon i should expect more than the 31meg quoted ? :)

Maybe 40Mb/s @ 0.4 miles. Line length is probably longer than you think.

Well...I wasn't expecting to get a response like this from Superfast Cymru

Mr *****

We can confirm from the deployment plans that your postcode area and cabinet 18 on the Cwmbran is within scope of the Superfast-cymru programme and will be enabled for the fibre product FTTP. Due to ongoing planning activities there is not a confirmed date for the work to be carried out.

My bottom has just erupted.

Thank you for your enquiry. You are connected to the Otley Exchange, cabinet 4.

Our systems indicate that work is ongoing with the deployment of your cabinet and, if all goes to plan, we are hopeful the cabinet will be ready for service early-mid August 2013, barring any complications.

It's about time! They've only put work back about 5 times since 2011!

If FTTP is planned for my Area, Surely the option of FTTC should be there aswell...right?

As much as I would like FTTP i'm not prepared to pay the £500+ fee for getting it (Unless that's covered by Welsh Government) Then the i'm assuming Hefty monthly fee, not worth it if i'm livestreaming Twitch and downloading games now and then, 40/10 would suit me perfect.

Installed and getting 79mb! That'll do :D

Unfortunately only gettin 35 over wireless. Need to get some powerline adapters or run some cat 5e I think!

No. The installation and month fee will cost the same if you buy the Infinity product from BT retail.

The max you can expect to pay for installation is £100 odd. Maybe you got the £500 figure from FTTP on demand.

@KIA

You're right - the installation fee alone for FoD is £500. Re: standard FTTP it seems to be a bit of a lottery where OpenReach decide to deploy it. Do you know if they have a tangible rationale for choosing FTTP over FTTC in a given area?
