BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

BT are installing tomorrow. I have the home hub but I do not have any username and password. does this come auto configured to the box.

I want to make sure before the installer comes?

thanks

If you want to use your own router the username is [email protected] and you can use any username you want :)

I hope BT Infinity is available before the Sky change over occurs in autumn and "gaming-mode" is no longer available. "Calender year 2013" is not very reassuring.

Virgin Media are crap for upload / gaming / international routing so they're never going to be an option.

Does anyone know ?

guys I was looking at how my line came to the pole and into the ducts to see the path it would take to the cabinet.

from the cabinet while driving in the car it was 0.5 miles.

obviously the ducting may differ slightly.

so, the pole and my line.

line comes from my house to some soft of electricity supply pole, not a proper BT

there is a line between the proper BT pole (that has a duct system, BT grid underneath) and this pole my line goes to

not only my line but 3 other lines go to this pole and there is a little DP on this pole which obviously terminates our lines and then passes over this single cable line to the BT pole which would then no doubt do the usual BT run of down the pole into the ducting system etc.

my question is, wouldn't that be bad practice having multiple lines sharing this one cable, or am I misunderstanding the situation?

I cannot see multiple pairs in this cable in the DP as it is up the pole, but anyone with experience, can you comment on this?

I am estimated as having 31mb down and 5mb up. installation on Monday.

curious to know about the design of how my line gets into the BT system

thanks

I think there must be multiple pairs in it.

apparently BT engineer says I am approx. 800m away although I did not see them do any tests on the line etc.

they simply brought the modem and I plugged it into my network.

I do get the following though.

I am happy enough with that speed.

BT engineer also said that it was aluminium cable as he spoke to an engineer who wired this estate however I am not convinced as that speed is pretty good with a 0.5m drive along the road to the cabinet, in my opinion unless I am wrong?

I also have the model b-focus v-2fub/r rev.b modem. worth me hacking it?

Ordered with plusnet this morning, got mac code from o2 within an hour so just playing the waiting game now, goodbye 7meg broadband :D

Can anyone advise me on the best product to help me with my issue please?

With my iPhone 5 and iPad Mini, I've noticed that at night it keeps dropping the WiFi connection, especially when I'm streaming say YouTube and it's very annoying! I have to go back to settings and tap on my network to reconnect it and what do you know, 30 seconds later it drops again! Never noticed it happening during the day but then again I'm at work anyways so most of my time online is during the evenings so I can't say it's wireless interference.

I've tried everything from resetting the router to default, changing wireless channels, factory restored my devices, changed my security key etc...The strange thing is that I don't experience such disconnections with my other wireless devices so I dunno if it's an issue between Apple devices and the HH3. Ethernet connections are fine and I primarily use powerline adapters throughout the house.

I've been thinking of 3 ways I could get past this:

1) replace the HH3. I did ask BT once about the £35 offer for the HH4 but they outright advised me to just get a Netgear one because its so much better. Since it would be different hardware altogether to a HH3, I hope it shouldn't have the same issues with my Apple devices.

2) get a wireless access point and connect it to the HH3 via powerline adapter. Can't have long cables through the house. Would help extend range also upstairs as the HH3 is downstairs. Again different hardware and my device would connect to this rather than directly to the HH3.

3) get a powerline adapter with built in wireless. This is something I've been considering for a while and would be similar to 2). Takes up less space but more expensive than an access point I think.

Which would you guys advise for me to get? Thanks!

PS. Forgot to say my Apple devices have no such issues connecting reliably at work though! Which is why I'm sure it's a HH3 thing.

@naisdes

Radio signals propagate best from on high, so the chances are that option 2 is your best bet. Bear in mind that powerline adapters require their brethren to be on the same power circuit in order to communicate with them, so make sure your upstairs and downstairs sockets are on the same circuit breaker.

@naisdes after long talks and 4 routers from BT they said they cant help me lol so put in a complaint but everybody else just buys a router to replace there's since it has issues with apple devices (most likely a firmware issue as apple products connect a little differently then windows etc) I'm looking at the "ASUS RT-N66U N90" if that's any good to you.

So what's the current upload speeds for FTTP?

Interested as i'll be doing Twich streams when I get Fibre.

This is what i get (my ping used to be 5 don't know why it's going up)

I stream with xsplit at 1650kbs and can go a bit higher.

I think option 2 for a wireless access point would be a good choice as well as they are pretty cheap. I would still need to connect via powerline my HH3 to the access point which will be placed somewhere upstairs, but I've got six of those adapters all working fine at the moment on both floors. Looks like a decent access point will set me from about £20 while a powerline wireless adapter will be about £40.

Where have you read about other Apple users who have experienced problems with their HH3? I thought mine was an isolated case, so I'm very interested to read about any other cases. I thought it was my iPad Mini at first and I was going to visit the Genius Bar and blame the iPad. But then after testing with my iPhone 5, which I recently updated to 6.1.4, it still suffers the same issue!

That ASUS along with the Netgear router seem pretty price at around £100 minimum. That's the only thing putting me off that option.

Don't worry I have the same issue with my iPad 4gen (ios6) although it only seems to do it if its doing bandwitdth intensive tasks like video streaming. I would update it but it seems the wifi issues still exist hopefully apple fix it by ios7. Oh and a windows7 laptop seems to do it as well but only when multiple wifi devices are connected as the home hubs radio is poor.

An availability date of March 14 has reappeared on the checker. I hope that the quoted August date is still on.

Mine seems to have appeared back on the checker today too, still says the 30-Jun-13 placeholder date though. Was quoted early to mid august from that email and going by roadworks there's still work to be done this week, but Openreach now say "Accepting orders" but no one is... it's all very confusing :p
