BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I am getting my BT fibre installed on Monday, about time!

I have a little comms cabinet in my boiler room where my BT master socket is. my network also starts there i.e all my rooms are patched back there over cat 6.

I was thinking of having the modem installed to the master socket in this cabinet and then having the wan port of home hub in the living room patched back into the modem.

this would be less than 30m.

am I likely to lose any speed this way, or am I better off having the hub next to the modem?

thanks

You won't lose any speed but how will you connect the wired part of your LAN to the router?

why dont u have the hub next to the modem and then connect the hub to your switch (if it is in your comms cabinet). then everything is hidden?

I also have more network points where the hub is provisioned to go, so this will allow it to be part of the network.

the cabinet where the master socket is, is in a cloak room which has a door on it which is closed. the signal is not the best to get around the house or garden this way.

guys I was looking at how my line came to the pole and into the ducts to see the path it would take to the cabinet.

from the cabinet while driving in the car it was 0.5 miles.

obviously the ducting may differ slightly.

so, the pole and my line.

line comes from my house to some soft of electricity supply pole, not a proper BT

there is a line between the proper BT pole (that has a duct system, BT grid underneath) and this pole my line goes to

not only my line but 3 other lines go to this pole and there is a little DP on this pole which obviously terminates our lines and then passes over this single cable line to the BT pole which would then no doubt do the usual BT run of down the pole into the ducting system etc.

my question is, wouldn't that be bad practice having multiple lines sharing this one cable, or am I misunderstanding the situation?

I cannot see multiple pairs in this cable in the DP as it is up the pole, but anyone with experience, can you comment on this?

I am estimated as having 31mb down and 5mb up. installation on Monday.

curious to know about the design of how my line gets into the BT system

thanks

Now i'm getting worried. I want to upgrade as i've been stuck on 1.5mb for the last few years and it's driving me crazy.

@JAzz

If your exchange isn't listed, the chances are it isn't enabled.

Says my exchange isn't on future plans so am guessing it isn't enabled. Just intrigued by this Fibre on demand service, costs a lot more to get it set up so I've put an enquiry in and lets see what they say!

As with everyone else BT keeps putting back my upgrade to FTTC, this address check says the end of this month, but I MOT'd a BT guy's van a few weeks ago and he said for my cabinet it'd probably be closer to september.

Currently get around 11mb with Sky but I dunno if I want to stick with them or not.

woohoo well according to plusnet and BT websites i can now order FTTC but sky says its still not available in my area, who to believe ? NGA did say mid august but that seems the generic response lately

None of the checkers (phone number, postcode or address) say fibre is coming at all to my cabinet or anywhere else in town. This is despite the fact that all but a couple of the existing cabinets have had a fibre cabinet next to them for a month.

On another note, when I was walking the dog the other day I noticed that the door on the old PCP cabinet wasn't closed properly. It looked like one or the 2 locks wasn't latched properly. It wasn't like that the day before so there's clearly still something going on. I just want to know when I can order!

Believe the BT wholesale checker. Sky have to add a GEA link between the BT kit and their own equipment.

BT are installing tomorrow. I have the home hub but I do not have any username and password. does this come auto configured to the box.

I want to make sure before the installer comes?

thanks
