BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Well that happened as planned, a shiny new FTTC cabinet was fitted.

And then that happened, they dug up the road again by the new cabinet, fiddled with the power cable, and tarmaced it over again.

I've been and checked the FTTC cabinet today, but I can't hear any cooling fans running inside yet :(. Soo... what's next?

Saw someone in a high viz fiddling with it today (didn't see any OpenReach logo or a BT van nearby though). Hopefully he's pressing the magic 'on' button?

Just checked and mine has now popped up as available so have ordered with sky and its being fitted on the 29th of July, up until Friday it was still saying available march 2014.
One very happy bunny sitting here now!

On a side note I have just phoned up sky because I was a bit unimpressed with the fact that new customers get £10 per month off for the first 6 months and existing customers get nothing and the very nice bloke on the other end of the phone has now given me it free for the first 6 months result!

^ Arg Im hoping mine is the same

2 cabs, 7&8 both dug up a few weeks ago, 7 became available today....im on 8

It is on now though and the "FTTC is not yet available" references have gone from the ADSL checker but the date stands at March 2014

Hopefully only a few days to go

Jus had a bombshell dropped by BT, a few months ago I was assured by BT that my cabinet was going to have a 80/20 connection to my house fantastic I thought! Now just checked on BT wholesale site and had this lovely piece of news.

WBC FTTC Up to 19.9 Up to 4.6 -- 31-Mar-14

Yet the road behind me can get up to 60mb :(

That's a pretty crap speed more likely it wasn't superfast Fibre afterall, more likely ADSL2+ old copper wire. That's a shame!

I'd imagine the cab will be enabled for full speed fiber just your line isn't upto the full speeds over FTTC. (Would need to know the length and quality of your line from house to cab tho to be sure).

I am only about 300 meters from my local box that's the crazy thing! I'll consult google maps and show you what I mean.

Red Dot = Main Road Cabinet
Blue = Sub Cabinet and I live in St Annes

The thing I don't get is there is a Fiber box at the Red dot, and for some reason they are yet to lay cables to the Blue dot as it stands I have 9mb ADSL2 so I can't see for how or why I would only get 19mb?

I wasnt, Until yesterday i was on March 2014, Went from that direct to available

I did have an email from NGA saying July and work was carried out at the start of the month. My first ever date was May 2012

BT still down for upgrading

Edit
Order Placed, installed next Thursday 25th :D

Is it normal the estimated date to vanish from the checkers for months? Mine was saying September, then it changed to 2014. When the cabinets were installed in May every mention of fibre was removed. There's still nothing now :(

I'm the same as you, about 320 metres from my cabinet. I'm estimated at 59.1Mb/s but I think even that's conservative. You may be a property with an aluminium line.

As for the March 2014 thing, this is what I got from Openreach:

Mr *******, sorry for the confusion, the ADSL checker is set to the end of the 4th quarter when the Fibre cabinet is delayed to keep the calls/enquiries to a minimum, the system shows that the cabinet that will feed your area is on track to be completed around September 2013, orders will not be taken until this date has been confirmed that the cabinet will be completed.

Hope this helps and it will not be long until the order books are opened.

It might be worth dropping an email to NGA Enquiries.

I was informed a month or so ago with an email from NGA

Dear Sir,

I'm afraid that we have experienced engineering problems with the provision of the fibre optic cable between the exchange and the cabinet which is requiring ne excavations to install new duct work.
This had led to delays in the go live date which is currently estimated to be at the end of July to the beginning of August.

NGA Enquiries

So perhaps it could be a place holder or something, but they did say I should have had it in my cabinet by mid May. So needless to say I won't be holding my breath, I am expecting to be waiting longer.

mine was march then august now just got this email back :/
i might just move house so I can get it!

Thank you for your further enquiry about fibre broadband at Carlisle cabinet 94. Unfortunately we have encountered problems with the underground duct network with regards to your cabinet. This has meant that the deployment of your cabinet is now delayed due to the extra amount of work required. I’m afraid to state that it is now predicted to go live in early December.
I appreciated that this is frustrating news, but the deployment of fibre broadband is quite complex and sometimes we find issues which delay our planned deployment.

@esK',@R0Z4G

I think ducting and power are probably the two most common reasons a cabinet is delayed. If they have to dig up the roads to lay new ducts it means an application to council, etc etc. They will now divert those man resources intended for your cabinet to easier ones, then come back when they can fixed the problem.

Whilst frustrating for those affected, you can understand why openreach do this. Ultimately, they are trying to allow the maximum number of households per £ access to FTTC/FTTP broadband. If one cabinet x is going to cost ten times the cost of cabinet y yet only allow a similar number of subscribers potential access to FTTC...cabinet is going to fall to the bottom of the pile until the cheaper upgrades have been completed.

At last mention of fibre for my phone number

I know that date is just a default date so is practically meaningless but at last they're showing that it's actually coming considering that the cabinet was installed 2 months ago. There's loads of works going on at the exchange at the moment

Guys I'm giving some thought from moving with the provider that I am with at this moment (Virgin) to BT. How highly do you fellas recommend it? I just received a letter through the mail this morning stating that I must ease down on the downloads. They are placing me on the naughty step, as it were and putting me through a traffic management
