BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I'm hoping the roadworks at my cab on the 8th august is the last before it goes live. It's the last one listed on the roadworks site and cabs are going live all around here atm.

I cant understand why the benefits of filtered faceplate's hasn't been more publicised, all these people with low speed connections would more than likely see huge speed increases as soon as there poor extension wiring is no longer dragging their sync speed down.

The filtering part of the faceplate is not really the cause of low speed connections. It just saves you having a filter at each extension socket. So if people with ADSL dont have these filters installed its because they haven't been told or are not aware so not really poor wiring but their own inexperience.. If you dont have all your sockets filtered you generally experience things like the ADSL dropping when you make a phone call. Hence why BT brought out the filtered faceplate as it was cheaper than supplying the ADSL filters and also solved the faults they kept getting about poor voice quality and dropped internet connections so saved them money that way.

What should improve the speed and I think is included on new faceplates is to isolate the bell wire. This is where most of the speed increase comes from and can often result in leaps of 1.5mb or above. Ie when I did mine 7 years ago I went from 2mb to 3.5mb. The bell wire was used to produce the "ringing" sound on old analogue phones hence the term bell wire.

BT at one point were selling the "iPlate" which was a faceplate that filtered the incoming line and also isolated the bell wire. These were being sold for £9.95. When in fact all you had to do was go round your sockets and cut the bell wire.

Not entirely sure but the stopped selling/providing them because of what they actually did could be achieved for free. Also think a certain fruit company objected to the name or that could be a fallacy.

The bell wire isolation was then built into the new faceplates they were fitting.

It isn't deliberate. It's usually delayed by cab power, fibre, road works, planning permission, etc.

Yes that's correct.

There are a number of reasons for this:

Blocked underground cable routes
Problems with providing electrical power to a cabinet
Issues with a cabinet’s location
Occasionally a cabinet may be removed from the roll-out programme due to restrictions beyond our control

Still getting an "ok" speed in london

20 Down, 10 up.

Has been better but that was minutes ago so guessing still peak time.

What are others getting in the NW7 Area?

Had FTTP installed this morning but apparently there has been issues and I have no connection. Engineer told me it should be sorted by end of play Today.....The PON light just keeps flashing so if it's the same in the morning I'm gonna have to waste my time calling them to sort it. I was on Sky for years with no issues but had to move as BT offered fibre as Sky could not and the 250kbs download speed was killing me, but at least it worked. Majorly cheesed off at the moment.

Sound like a crappy ex-army engineer who doesn't know how to do the job proper. Most BT Openreach engineer are genuine openreach qualifications and the rest of openreach engineer are ex-army workers.

This is annoying. Our cabinet was installed in the middle of May and the power connection at the same time. In all that time there's still no mention of fibre coming at all on BTs checker

http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/where-and-when/ is pretty useless as it won't tell you the date of when your property getting FTTC live? BT are in the dark again. Won't tell us.

Correct, but for some it does show you if there is a delay on your cabinet,

When I put my postcode in i I had a yellow pin in place on the cabinet, something like

" Sorry for the delay, taking longer than expected, power problems, broken trunking, drivel.....blah blah"

Now this is gone and power is on I can only assume Openreach have cleared it off their system and handed to over to BT for service

BT bringing out yet another Home Hub but with built in modem this time http://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.ph...me-hub-5-vdsl2-broadband-wireless-router.html

Thats harsh on the folks who have been paying £35 to get sent a HH4

Funny you should mention the yellow pins, just checked mine and seems there's an issue at my cab and 2 nearby ones now :( Doesn't give any info though other than "there may be an issue" so gave NGA an email to see if they can say whats going on, looks like these 3 cabs are the only ones in our town that haven't went live now.

HH5 has a very nice spec.

300Mb/s for £50 per month anyone? ;) http://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/5919-bt-retail-300-mbps-fibre-for-50-per-month-anyone.html

There is a hint about what BT Retail is doing with the Fibre on Demand service, and the suggestion is that they plan to sell it initially to business based customers, which is likely to be a side effect of the 36 month contract the service requires and the train of though that only businesses can afford the high upfront costs.
