BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Hi, i'm considering BT infinity now that its available in my area. Currently I run a 15m RJ11 cable from an upstairs extension socket to the router which is situated besides my PC in another room. If the engineer can change the extension socket to the master, will it be possible to use the existing RJ11 cable to connect the VDSL modem?

Well it doesnt really make sense.

Im fairly sure my BFBC2 issues are nothing to do with me.

When I was with BE there, the only issues I had was the disconnecting after 20mins thing (router issue) but then everything was fine.

Now with BT, no more disconnections, but this week, for some reason intermitant (two days long) issues with 'not being able to connect to ea online' and hence no servers in the server bowser.

Other times without changing a thing! it works fine.

I ws looking on line and there are people talking about using a vpn to test it, finding out it works with a vpn and not without, which indicates BT interfereance.

At the same time, they would be on purpose throttling gaming traffic. Its only BT that is traffic managed?

Would it be EA Online having the issue?

I tried checking online, but there isnt any indication of current issues...

Pain in the behind is all I can say. The only good news is that it doesnt last for ever. It will work again (not sure when) but I anticipate it disapear ing out of the blue as well.

Its strange becuase I can login using my username, but cvlicking the find server button, it keeps searching and searching, and eventually sais' failed to connect to eaonlin, try again'

I am now also having problems 'Failed to connect to EA server' was working perfect before

Can login fine, but it wont find servers.

Just test using VPN and it works perfect, FU BT..

Should be fine,

I'm using a 3m RJ11 cable from the master socket to modem.

Now from what I understand, you have

Mastersocket/direct line(downstairs)->Extensionsocket(upstairs)->15m RJ11->Modem/Router

This will greatly effect your speed, especially with infinity, so you might want to set the modem right by your master socket downstairs (1m), then run a RJ45 from your modem to the homehub located upstairs via wire/powerline. -or something similar atleast.

Thanks. I thought that there could be some effect on the speed. I guess my other option is to have the modem & homehub beside the master socket and just put a wireless pci/USB in my desktop PC upstairs. Might just have to trial that and the powerline option to see which works best.

Fair enough. wonder if its worth running a trace to a BC2 server? maybe you can catch the issues? Try running WinMTR?

*I'm guessing here btw. :)

Just pingplotted a few IPs

159.153.235.12 - Login Server
159.153.235.4 - Server List?
easo.ea.com - Server List?

All seem to trace fine and under 100ms, no spikes either.

Funny my ping is actually lower overall when using VPN :)

They will be aware of it already, don't worry. 'Sides, it's not like BT are the only one making a mistake like this. Remember all the heat VM got last year when WoW Cataclysm changed all the ports the game used? :P

I hope they are aware of it and it is something they are not doing on purpose!

That would suck so bad, if I cant play BF3 in 6 months time, becuase BT say NO!!

The problem is internitant, one day it'l work, the next no server browser for 2 days, and then out of the blue back again....

I hope its only temporary.

You should arrange for an engineer to come visit you, I've got a feeling your openreach modem is faulty, I had similar problems to you and it turns out there's a lot of faulty openreach modems. He replaced it free of charge and all the problems seem to be fixed now

You think it is the modem and not the hub?
