BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I can sort of understand the build costs going up if they've been digging holes and realised that it's costing a lot more than they anticipated, but I really don't understand the monthly rental costs going up almost three fold, and an extra 50% on the connecting part of the charge.

There's a fair amount of suspicion that it's related to the new BDUK connection voucher scheme, whereby SME's can get a grant of up to £3000 towards the installation cost. This will likely lead to a lot of demand from SME's and they can justify the increased monthly fees. Openreach likely doesn't mind taking a larger piece of the grant pie each time either.

Openreach didn't see enough demand from individual consumers (though I have to wonder whether the kind of speed freak early adopters who would be interested in this kind of product weren't already tied into FTTC contracts) so they've retargeted the product and adjusted the rental to suit the expected market.

Anyone else had instability with an HH5? My mum ordered one for her Infinity VDSL connection and I set it up on Friday. All seemed to be fine but it locked up after a couple of hours and the hub had a green light - something I can't find any information about. After a reboot it was ok until this morning where it locked up again. It's not doing anything out of the ordinary, I have a server I've left there with a few things forwarded to it but it's not doing that much.

The previous combo of the BT Openreach modem with a Netscreen 5GT firewall was absolutely rock solid so it's looking like I'll be popping up there in the morning to roll back to that while keeping the HH5 for wireless duties since 802.11ac is rather nice.

Guys quick and hopefully last question about the fiber cabinets again. I know this all probably depends on the location and if they have any difficulties but how long would it take Bt to install a fiber cabinet?

Best way to get hold of BT with regards a problem?
So I spoke too soon and I'm now about 12 days into an issue with my Infinity 2 connection.
All was working fine - 74/16 connection. Installed a HH5 and saw the connection drop considerably. Despite this it was stable.
My profile had not been reset to Infinity 1 as has happened to others. This was confirmed by people looking at the stats on my HH5.
However as of right now I have a 48/8 connection.

On the HH5 I have the following stats:

Maximum Data Rate:
27066 / 87406

However I also have Date rate:
20000 / 49000

These figures have not changed since the HH5 was installed.
I've tried calling BT, but having no luck with support - being told I am on the right profile and that "all our services are an up to".....

I'm using the BT support forums, but to be honest not really getting any help there. No mods even bothered responding to my thread until 2 days ago.

Just wondering where the next step should be. I was considering Facebook and Twitter as these are much more public forums - if I'm making a complain publically maybe they will get things sorted?
Other than that, any real way I can escalate things and hopefully get this situation sorted?

Yes. It's best to check on a weekly basis or daily if you're as sad as some of us. :D

I checked mine pretty much daily over 3 years ago when fibre was enabled for my area. Placed the order the second it went live at 00:00, the order was promptly messed up and I got an engineer that was sent out that didn't know what fibre was  To be fair to BTO though they got another one round an hour later that did know what he was doing :D I swear i'm not usually this sad :D

So best way to switch from ADSL2 to BT infinity with minimal/no downtime?

I asked on be forums, but got not much, other than phone be cancellation line, but I don't want to do that until I'm ready to cancel and know exactly what I need, so I only have to deal with being offered sky packages once + I'd also prefer advice from those who have actually performed the switch and experiences with it etc.

Everything is already BT, except for my BB.

Looks like plenty in this thread have gone from ADSL/2 to fibre. So best way for minimal/no downtime?

I was with O2/BeThere ADSL2+ for Broadband but had Phone Line Rental and Calling Plan with BT. As-soon as FTTC arrived in my area I moved to BT Infinity, so now everything is with BT.
When I moved to BT Infinity FTTC there was no downtime. The OpenReach engineer turned up (with my O2/BeThere still working) and it was only once he started poking things that my internet died. 30mins later he was gone and my BT Infinity FTTC was up and running.

My FTTC is now available to order as my order had been confirmed by BT Wholesale that my installation date will be next week 13th February while my Virgin Media cable broadband will be disconnected on the 16th February. Can't wait to get rid of Virgin Media and welcome to a fibre plusnet for stable and reliable.

So when did you cancel be/o2, as that's the main thing that I'm not sure of.

Did you get MAC, give them 30 days notice and just order BT? Or did you wait until BT were up and running and then cancel? (some suggest that in case of problems).

Thanks

I ordered BT (and chose installation date etc) before getting the MAC from O2/BeThere. Then once I'd got the MAC, I went into the BT order online and submitted the MAC. Remember that once a MAC has been generated, it has to be used within 30days. If a MAC is not used within 30 days, it is nulled and your internet continues as normal. By used it means when BT actually do the changeover on your account (not just you typing it in online).

I'm not even sure that I ever actually formally cancelled with O2/BeThere... IIRC it all happened automatically when BT activated the MAC.

Thanks. I'll follow your example then.

Unrelated, to change over, but will I need a new phone line/socket? and will they do it for nothing?

I have phone line with them now, but it's not a NTE5 socket. It is a normal socket (no test socket).

Small wires come out of it and go to another little box on the wall and then the phoneline is connected to that. It's a very old setup.

There is only a small run of phone line between the wall and the weird box. If they have to change it, I don't know if there is enough there to fit a nte5 socket, unless they can fit it the other side of the box, using the skinny wires.

Roadworks.org reporting that my cabinet is being installed in the next 2 weeks thanks to our local BDUK roll out, so looking forward to taking part in this thread!

Hi all, new to FTTC and wondering how Xbox live players (fifa and CoD etc) feel about BT infinity's top product vs Plusnet's top product?

After upgrading to BT infinity and going through the rigmarole of BTs contracted "engineers" not connecting things up properly and two more resulting visits until it got fixed my initial joy at 26 down and 4 up was short lived. My line was so heavily interleaved that my ping was pretty much double that of my old BT adsl was (5 down).

Either way thinking of moving to Virgin media, apparently I'm eligible for "up to 120 mbs" . Anyone know how I would get a proper estimate of my speed with virgin other than just "up to 120"? Also what's virgins traffic shaping policy like? ( I have read up on it, but In my experience what is written and the reality differ).

Thanks
