BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Infinity 2 is due to be up and running 28 Jan for me, they said i dont need engineers install, just wait for text and then connect hh5, anyone else have this? My mates all had an engineer install infinity 2 for them.

If the property has had fibre previous from any provider yes.

FTTC is the technology used by OpenReach... to deliver the BT Infinity service, along with Sky Fibre, PlusNet Fibre, etc etc.

The acronym stands for Fibre To The Cabinet. This means that the connection between your streetside green cabinet and the telephone exchange is done over fibre optic. Only the 'short' distance between the streetside green cabinet and your modem/router is done over copper cable, using VDSL2 protocol.

In traditional ADSL broadband, you used copper all the way from your modem/router to the streetside green cabinet and from there onto the telephone exchange.

Thanks!

How are you peeps finding BT Infinity ?

Just gone fibre:) was told by the ISP I should expect 79.5, the Openreach guy said I was testing at 79.857 speedtest is coming out at 75\18 which I am more than happy with compared to the 2\0.5 I was getting.

They're doing self install in a lot of cases now, the HH5 has a VDSL modem in it and the faceplate doesn't need to be VDSL specific.

I've just ordered FTTC with Sky and am not getting an engineer visit, also a colleague recently had his Infinity installed with no visit.

After overheads, etc. and I believe BT still have upstream QoS enabled on the HH5 though not 100% on that which prevents any one application including speedtests quite maxing the upload, 75/18 is about the max you will get give or take a few bit/s on a full 80/20.

Its great:) the wife and I have been separately streaming hd in addition to me downloading a large file:) Since I got fibre this morning I have downloaded about 40 gb which would have taken 43 hours pre-fibre.

Still really pleased with my connection, installed at beginning of Dec

My local exchange went FTTC live last month but unfortunately it doesn't look like they're rolling it out for the entire area. Was hoping my village would at least get it, but seems not. Still stuck on 3.7Mbps ADSL for a while longer then. :(

Where abouts are you? Been rolled out here since around 2011 iirc, I think it's even been rolled out as far as peterhead.

Connected to Mintlaw exchange. They got it last month but no such joy for those of us a little further away. Peterhead and Fraserburgh both got it earlier last year so we're literally stuck in the middle out here. My village does have a school though so I'm hoping perhaps that accelerates their plans a bit.

Yeah, the open reach modem has been fine, no drop outs or anything and the bt engineer fitted it out of the way under my desk, just the hh3 seems to be the root cause of any issues I have.

So all in all I think I'd be easier keeping the modem and just getting a router....any recommendations?

It's been about 7 years since I've had to purchase a router of any description so massively out of the loop!!

Thanks for the replies so far :)

Did you get any further in your search? I'm also looking to replace a HH3 but struggling to find a decent replacement, every time I think I've found one I stumble across someone having major issues with it! I don't have any ac devices so thought picking up a dual n capable device would be easy...

Asus Dark Knight routers are the business.

I would think so, makes sense for them to fill in the gaps :)

Ended up getting a TP-Link Archer C7 AC1750: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-112-TP&groupid=46&catid=1596

Been running it 2 days now, once the firmware was updated it was absolutely perfect.

I ended up in the same boat, I had originally settled on an Asus router until seeing many reports on overheating and anything being in the USB ports causing interference.

Finally its happened, and ordered straight away, quoted that I should get the full 80/20, hopefully i should since the cab has been activated either yesterday or today and the people in my area are all derelict.

My date is 11th of Feb, the wait is almost over :')
