BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

We're almost neighbours, I'm in Fishie!

I suspect it's the weird telephone wiring in the house but will find out tomorrow when the BT engineer visits. Being able to use other people's BT connections via WiFi is coming in handy though, even if it is even slower than the already-slow broadband we had...

Ah, just 9 miles down the road then! :D

I read about that BT Wifi thing... is that something HomeHub only? I'll be ditching that thing and using it as a doorstop as soon as it arrives! Ordering one of those older modems so I can view my linestats and still use my AC68U... too expensive to replace with crap.

I tried to order Sky Fibre but was told that was a problem with the cabinet planning. Then it got rejected so I ordered via BT to get an answer. They have said the cabinet is full. Whats the best way to make sure I am first in line when someone leaves?

Also if the cabinet is full for bt or sky could plusnet for instance have any space in the cabinet or is it first come first served?

I think you can use other people's BT Wifi even if you don't have a HH, you just need to be opted in. If you do use the HH it sends out an open network for others to use (they have to sign in first).

In any case, BT engineer came today and to his credit, got it all sorted. I wasn't here but evidently he ran a new cable from where the line enters the house, straight to a new master socket, bypassing the existing wiring which was evidently causing interference/errors. Seems to have worked, the HH5 is synced at 79Mbps and I'm getting some excellent download speeds. :D

Yeah to hell with letting people do that. :p

Interesting that he did that though - how come you got an engineer to visit, did that happen first time or was it just because you had problems? What was your estimated download speeds versus you sync/real downlink? Mines an estimated 64, hoping for higher tbh. :D

I'd still rather have the engy come and give me a new master rather than all this effort I'm going through to extend it upstairs by a few metres. :(

It was requested, when it went live on Tuesday the router couldn't sync with the cabinet. There's been problems with the phone wiring in this house before (some old LED bulbs caused the ADSL to drop out, never figured out why) so there were apparently lots of errors happening. New cable has been run from where the line enters the house to where the socket we used for the phone/ADSL is (which looked like a master socket but actually wasn't!) and it's all working fine now.

The BT wholesale checker reckoned this:

Code:
                             Down Up
FTTC Range A (Clean) 80 64 20 20 -- Available
FTTC Range B (Impacted) 79.6 52.9 20 12.2 -- Available

BT's own estimate when ordering was 65-80Mbps, and HH5 is synced at 79-ish Mbps down and 12 up, Steam download going right now at 5.7MB/sec. After a few years with a 3.5Mbps connection, this is pure heaven. :D

Ah, excellent! BT checker also said I'd get 64-80. Hopefully I'll get a similar speed to you then, although a bit weird your upload is hit that much, since I've normally seen the download go down and the upload stay stable.

Got most of my ordered pieces in now myself, just need the Cat6.

To be honest I'm not remotely worried, I uploaded some PS4 captured footage to YouTube earlier and it was done in about a minute or so whereas before it'd be a good hour and slow down the entire connection for everything else in the process. :D

Having to resist the urge to download everything in my Steam library just because I can!

I'm just scared that with this new power I'll start to crave every last Mbit... I mean you've read what I'm doing already :p The extra upload is definitely the best part, I was on 448Kbps and almost any kind of upload crapped my ping out in Diablo letting everything kill me.

Gonna get my download-fu on soon~

Hi guys my mum had fttc booked in but engi came and said its all there just not turned on? So she's now on 1 meg Adsl! It shows up she can get 80 meg and she's just got a fttc cab at end of her road which has been there for over a year. Seams odd

I'm now 12 weeks into my BT FTTP saga of having no phone or internet with no end in sight.

Openreach have allegedly been fixing a routing issue (In an FTTP enable block of flats no less) for 10 weeks. The latest debacle is that they said it was resolved, booked a new appointment but between the appointment being booked and today, the fix either broke or was never actually fixed in the first place. To give Openreach credit, they did note this on the system last week after lifting the order block, just unfortunately BT's shambolic processes couldn't take account of said information and pressed ahead with the appointment anyway. Cue engineer turning up today bright and early to say that there is still a routing issue.

So, I will now be taking a 3rd day off work to deal as a result of their bumbling incompetence. If only I could switch to another FTTP supplier.

Can somebody answer a question for me regarding FTTC.

It was installed over 10 days ago and so is outside of the initial "training period". It synced at 39997kbps and stayed that way for at least 10 days. I have the HH5.

Recently the router has been re syncing 1-2 times a day and syncing at lower speeds than expected.

For example it was syncing at 24500kbps then disconnecting and going back up to 29000kbps. It will then go up to 34000kbps and then go back down and back up. I have done a quiet line test and can hear a static hum but no specific crackling or popping. Any ideas what could be happening?

Got my HH5 in today - it's a shame it is widely known for being a piece of crap and you'd be better off with an openreach modem/own router combo, as it actually looks like a really nice bit of kit, much smaller than I was expecting too!

So my Talk Talk unlimited fibre has been like this for nearly two months now and TT can't find an issue! Pinging to Google during the day is 6-7ms, after 18:00 is >200ms.

Are you out of contract?
Have you tried forum support?

Got about 3 months left on my contract. I have tried the forums, they kept asking for trace routes and then told me no fault on the line.

I read somewhere that OFCOM allow you to cancel your contact if the fault isn't fixed within 28 days. It's been 2 months. Should I be able to cancel or atleast ask for a massive discount? Currently pay over £40p/m for 80/20 yet I'm only getting 2/0.2!
