BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

IMO Don't use the homehub, it's a load of crap.
From what I'm reading, the Home Hub 5 is getting rave reviews as the best ever bundled device in the history of the world!

Of course, I've not got one yet so I can't comment based on usage but the reviews are universally good.

Speed should generally be the same although sky were recently told by OFCOM that they have the highest and most consistent speeds at peak times of any of the providers. I'm pretty sure the current offer is free Fibre activation, a reduced twelve month contract and half price for a year at £10 per month. Might even get a line rental discount if you go through to cancellations.

I am planning on upgrading from BT Unlimited to Infinity. How do I get these deals?

Thanks.

At work we're finally getting fibre. Weds 29th July.
I'll add my opinions about the HH5 when we get it.

Yes. ISP bundled; big difference. Check the reviews on Amazon: half are great, half are one star. That's crap.

It is crap and known for dropping the connection which on VDSL means that DLM will hammer your connection as unstable! The router in it is certainly decent (though limited in options, and port forwarding will forever be broken) but the modem is appalling!

Imo, in an age where we have DLM and still run fibre over copper, you should never use an integrated unit. Separation of modem and router allows for rebooting without destroying your link sync rate accidentally.

G.INP has been enabled on my line this morning.

Downstream sync has improved a couple of Mb but it's the ping times that are most impressive: I'm down to sub-10ms pings whereas I was getting 30ms pings before.

Looking at my stats, interleaving depth is down to 4 on the downstream and upstream now so that would explain the much lower ping times.

I'm also surprised G.INP is enabled on the upstream as I understand this isn't normally the case.

So I've finally got Infinity installed and running. Moved in 3 weeks ago into a new build, so I guess it's not too bad really. Using speedtest I'm getting around 24mbps - I have a 38 mbps service. They offered me a 300mbps service lol! I'm paying £29 a month for the privilege so I expect to get what I'm paying for. I'm using the Hub 5.

My village is just getting sorted to have fibre installed. We're currently at the end of the line, and getting about 1.4 down and non existent up. What would you think I should be getting as a minimum? Or is it completely dependant on my geographical location?

What is your router synced at, and how are you connected to the router? Personally I don't find Speedtest reliable at all, it reports far lower speeds than I actually get on downloads via Steam etc.

It completely escaped my attention. This is wireless, and obviously I will need to retest on a wired connection. There are ethernet sockets in the house which was a nice unexpected extra. But I'm not entirely sure they are properly connected at the mo and will need to get the site manager to take a look when we're back from holiday. When I do wire the laptop I get a limited connection so something obviously isn't setup correctly. Only my wireless connection is working at present. Different speed test programs are also having different results. Some are registering 36 Mbps, so that's not shabby at all.
