BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I managed to get a deal of £46.99 a month on 18month contract, including line rental for 200mb connection. Was an existing customer so missed out on the money card offers. I'm happy with that because coming from 2meg is an absolute dream!

Took me 3 months to get it sorted, such a relief to finally get it sorted!

Ouch! Was that 6 weeks from ordering? They give you the spiel about it FTTP being complicated to deploy, which I'm sure it is on a nation scale but the fibre's in my street, just hook me up goddammit :D
Yep! All they had to do was run a line from the pole to my property but they couldn't even do that right. They sent engineers to do the internal work before this was done so that was obviously a no-go & they even manage to KO the phone lines & internet (which we were using!!) of the business downstairs in the process

I never use UPnP, always manually setup, at least that way you have some control on what enters your network.
I think it's pretty much impossible to not use UPnP if you're gaming. Every single game tends to use different ports even if they use the same environment (e.g. Steam).

I've been using UPnP for years and years without any single issue, that includes running snort on pfSense and checking logs.
I know people who have ran without a firewall and used a DMZ on their PC and console also due to gaming and headaches with ports. And they have been fine for years lol. It's more having that peace of mind.
It's like that Krack issue with wifi. Its been a known issue for quite a while before being made public. But who is going to come to the outside of your house imitate your wifi connection to get your to connect to his device so he can snoop on your connection? It's more of a worry for businesses etc. But still having that vulnerability there would you not rather, not have it if you can help it or just leave it be?

I run snort so I'm not particularly bothered. Quite a few times I've had to unblock stuff in snort for games, Starcraft 2 springs to mind or whatever the launcher is called.

Question for the guys that know.

I've just moved back to Plusnet from Zen, is there a set amount of time that it takes for G.INP to come back on etc?

The contractors finished pulling cables in our village about a week ago now. The open reach guys have been up the poles (all warning fibre overhead now). The exchange is FTTP enabled. The Open Reach availability checker has us at the build phase. Realistically how long before we are activated and I can order?

That's a length of string question, unfortunately, as there could easily be delays elsewhere (like hooking up your local node to the network). It'll be ready when it's ready.

Who knows. I've got a customer near Bala that the checker says can have FTTP, so we ordered 22nd September. It's still in survey with BTOR - next update is due 17th November!

Which is brutal. If the checker says you can order it then it should be ready for the installer visit and do the install. No maybe's aye, maybe's naw!

This site may need a fair run on fibre which will be the root of the delay. The other potential issue is that I've been told the install costs (ECCs) are over £1000, the order gets cancelled automatically

Last I heard, admittedly a year or more ago it was for existing customers only?
It is, but I still have a copper line at home so I'll just suffer a bit of ADSL and get onto the trial. Will have to read up how long it takes. Could also go for 1 month rolling VM broadband whilst it gets set up.

My Bt infinity 2 is up for renewal now.

Who are the better providers these days? I was thinking of moving to Plusnet and their fibre unlimited. Any thoughts on Plusnet and other providers?

Might move to Plusnet then as it’s only £29.99 a month.

When switching to a provider like Plusnet who use the BT infrastructure will my speeds change at all - I’m expecting them to stay exactly the same because it’s using the same line?

Sync speeds won't be affected, anything the ISP is responsible for could potentially slow you down.

I am on a discounted package with BT at the moment anyway so I'm not in a hurry to break contract and go elsewhere, if you don't have an issue with the price then the actual product is decent.
