BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Looks like GFAST is now available on the cabinet my parents are connected to. Once it's in an area do they usually crack on with other cabinets in the same town? They're on 27 and I'm on 29 or is it a matter of statistics and looking at the homes and businesses it will serve?

It's a wait and see job unfortunately, even my enabled cab has gone amber since I was installed.

If anyone is still following my g.fast tale of woe, it's taken a turn for the better today. Over 6 weeks since my telephone service was ceased, 4 missed appointments out of 6 and being told despite BT/BTW press releases specifically stating i'm in an official pilot area (as the OR tech stated) up till yesterday BT denied SOGEA existed/was offered. Today BT have came up with a 'new' solution: Acknowledge i'm in an SOGEA trial area and suggested trying to provision a number to the VoIP interface. I'd swear that's what i've said for 6 weeks, but clearly i'm just a customer. They're still dodging the answer to the question of the ported number, but it's progress. Rough maths indicates 4 missed appointments at £25 a go plus is £100, the £5/day for not installing the service the first time plus the 6 weeks of no phone at £8/day likely means that when BT eventually sort it, even at retail pricing (i'm currently paying £20/m for ultrafast 2) I don't expect to pay a BT bill for a while. Hopefully tomorrow will bring an estimated date for resolution.

I'm currently on BT Superfast Fibre 2 Unlimited (it's FTTC), which also includes BT Sport and a phone line package.

I can get Plusnet unlimited fibre extra + phone line for roughly £25 a month less, I assume it's not as good, or is it? My Homehub is playing up so I was thinking to just renew and then I get a Smart Hub and the disc thing too.

I'm happy to pay as I want the best possible. However I don't want to get robbed.

Much of muchness, at least with PN you don't have to deal with Indian call centres and/or terrible CS.

I've been with PN for a couple of years no and I think they're excellent for the price.

Another happy Plusnet customer here.

Plusnet's router is a bit basic (a rebadged older model BT Homehub), but I don't use it so I don't care. Apart from that, I can't see any reason to not to use them.

PN is in effect the same as BT (BT acquired them some time ago), but cheaper and UK based CS. I’d take them over BT given the choice on like for like products. If you go with BT you end up having to get BT Plus to get UK based CS and a boost on mobile data/speed.

Check roadworks.org or compare the density of buildings around the cabinets - Openreach won't upgrade a cabinet that only has a small number of properties nearby as G.Fast has a limited range. If your line length is 300m or more, you might as well forget about it now.

Openreach has rolled out g.fast in Dawley as it went live last December but nothing in my area yet but I don't care as long it bring FTTP to my area. I am 248m away from the cabinet still on 80/20 FTTC since 2014.

My line is 252m long according to openreach and g.fast isn't available for my address but is avalavail to the house 30m closer to the cabinet.
The cabinet is about 180m away from my building.
Contacted Openreach and they are investigating why it isn't available for me. Fingers crossed they allow it for my line.
I would be happy to get 120-150 down and 30up.

Are you in contract or out?

If out call up retentions and tell them about the quote you have from plusnet and ask if they will match it.
I don't know about your chances of getting a new homehub though I'd expect them to be reasonably obliging.

One slight problem, Plusnet is a BT owned business, of all the price matches that you could try, that’s arguably the one they care least about as they still make money, you will almost always be better using Quidco/TCB and moving ISP.

Openreach have announced they will be offering discounted FTTP installation and rental in certain areas.

No information as to which ISP's will be participating yet, unless someone knows otherwise?

I'd already posted that in the FTTP thread. I also asked Plusnet and they won't be doing it.
I live in Swinton.

Hey guys what period of stable connection does it take for Huawei cabinet to drop snr below 6db...?
I had my Sky running for 14 days straight (no disconnections) and it didn't happen. The only thing that happened was interleaving going down after first 48hours.
Now I'm switching to BT on the 18th Feb and wondered how long I'll have to wait to hopefully reach max speed.

There isn’t a public schedule so you just have to keep an eye on your local cabinet for the appearance of a G.Fast pod. But activation of the pod isn’t immediate and I wouldn’t count on getting the service unless you are reasonably sure that your line length is below 300m (which usually translates into a VDSL sync speed of 70-80Mbps).
