BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I still use an unlocked HG612 with my Asus AC 86U. the thing is bulletproof. Never loses sync, ever.

Just be sure to turn off QOS in the 612's settings to boost your upload speeds.

I found the BT modem's upstream QoS reasonably effective in a multi-user household - though you will lose about 1Mbit/s up on speedtests it tends to keep things like gaming free of ping spikes, etc. when other users are streaming and so on - not quite sure why as it only manages the upstream not downstream but it works.

Nice tip, didn't realise this was even a thing. Have just disabled as my router will do a far better job.

Upload is more likely to be constrained than download. The bigger reason is that whilst you can control the packets going out, there is little value in queuing packets as they come back in, all you will do is slow down the data streams. If the packets have already arrived at your router then why delay them?

In theory stuff like Netflix shouldn't be using much upload so just having upstream QoS shouldn't really have much effect I'd have thought but with the ECI Type 1B BT modem and an Asus RT-N66U (no QoS enabled on the router) leaving the default upstream QoS enabled on the BT modem meant if someone was gaming and a couple of people streaming there was almost no impact on the gaming without it there was more varied ingame latency and occasional ping spikes.

It only manages the upstream because it's actually really difficult to manage inbound QoS - remote servers will just send as fast as it can until it saturates a link.

Possibly there is something broken deep within the BT network - wouldn't be the first time* - hence why some people get weird ping spikes while streaming and the BT modem's upstream QoS seems to strangely manage to keep things smoother than normal with mixed gaming and streaming, etc. traffic when it really shouldn't make any difference in those kind of usages.

* Awhile back - I can't remember exactly when now, for around a year there was some major messed up routing within the core BT network that took awhile to be recognised as a problem and fixed i.e. living in Somerset to get onto the internet I was being routed at one point Yeovil->Birmingham->Reading->Sheffield->Bletchley->Ilford->Telehouse I kid you not! and various similar combinations which obviously were far from ideal and not only increased my latency but exposed me to network traffic conditions throughout the country. Even after finally getting my ELC contact to see why it was a problem it still took months for them to fix it.

Zen or Plusnet
I’m currently with zen, but I can’t justify staying when it’s £10/m more, plus although could be a number of factors I actually get a lot of disconnects more than when I was on BT and Sky in the past.

And not in a plusnet local loop so cost isn’t competitively

Sky do IPv6 but their router isn't brilliant. Vodafone don't do IPv6 and their router is worse, plus loads of people seem to have issues with the service.

BT through somewhere like topcashback then would be an OK alternative. If you pay bottom money you honestly shouldn't expect top end service or support. Zen are £30 per month now? They also guarantee no price rises.

I’ve been with talk talk for few days and as said it’s been fine. Sync slower as snr not dropped to 3 yet. Ping less than plus net by 1ms ha. Seems fine. 4K works. Fast in the evenings, no slow downs yet. I see no issues. Do you reckon if I contact them they will match Vodafone’s £22.99 price. I’m paying 26.50 but no speaker ha

How can Openreach be such a bunch of ******* idiots 100% of the time?

Incorrectly pricing installation and when questioned and pulled up on it, get ****** and make life difficult.

The sooner the competition hots up the better.

You shouldn't be dealing with Openreach at all, speak to your provider and have them go to bat for you.

Can’t do talk talk outside there network too
BT works out more per month then Vodafone/sky even taking into there gift card+ tcb or Quidco .
