BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I wish BT would get their top fibre packages on offer here to give a little competition! Max they offer is 50Mbps with zero idea when FTTP will be launched.

Yet BTW are rolling out FTTP to the poles everywhere currently  As if we need more broadband options

Do you have an MP living anywhere near you? You'd be amazed what local councils will fund BTOR for if there's a politician living in the area. :)

Probably because of the share price dropping I think. I was thinking to wait to order it myself but could be waiting a while!

I'm trying to work out if you're in an FTTP enabled area and want to place an order but can't. Or, if yoiu're in an FTTC area and want the FTTP infrastructure to be installed.

BT aren't taking any orders for FTTP at present as Openreach can't do the in house work. It makes sense really, BT aren't having to tell people they have no idea what their install date would be. I'm in the situation where FTTP is available in my area but until BT are taking orders I can't get things moving.

Same situation here, one of the first places to have FTTP activated and now I'm ready to order it as my contact is up end of May I can't.
Probably going to switch to Sky and hope they offer FTTP at some point later this year so I can upgrade.

Sky would need a Openreach engineer to attend your property to install FTTP, As Openreach have suspended all home visits atm, Sky would be exactly the same.
You're best just to wait really I think.

Sky I believe only offer 150mb, BT offer upto 900mb,
I had a company called Giganet who offered me 1GB Line with install first week of May, However they want to charge £135pm for that line!

Is this the same as the early days of ADSL? The Openreach guy ran an ethernet cable from my master socket to the bedroom, ending in an RJ11 socket on the wall, which is where my router is connected. No charge to me. But that cable is getting really tatty now, I'm honestly surprised it still works. So will they do the same again on these FTTP visits?

Completely different - an engineer is needed to terminate the actual fibre afaik
Hope they're willing to run it where you ask.
I don't mind crawling under the floor boards so all they would need to do is through the wall and u can pop it up through the floor boards to where I want it.
When they put the phone line in it's a right bodge can't wait to get rid of it.

If you want the fibre putting somewhere other than an external wall then you'd be well advised to run in some flexible conduit and putting in a string so the fibre cable can be pulled through it. It also makes it really simple to replace the fibre in the future.

If you're on a ducted underground feed currently then the fibre will pop up in the same duct - they won't dig a new trench to you, so bear that in mind.

Would they terminate in a loft space?

If your loft is fully boarded then I would assume they'd be OK with this, otherwise it's too much of a liability.

Mine goes through ducting under the ground as I'm in a newbuild property, I am hopefully having my garage concerted, then I'll run some of that ducting you linked to my garage / office just so I can have all the equipment in one place.

I assume when I get my FTTP installed I'm hoping to get the 900mb package from BT, my powerlines that I currently use wouldn't quite be up to the task? And best to run Ethernet cable to my PC from the router?

Ethernet, aye, even on the best of circuits power lines won't be anywhere close.

I'm pretty sure you could wire two powerline adaptors directly to each other and still not get close to the advertised throughput of the devices.

Just done a speed test on my FTTP line, paying for 50mb download and 10mb upload. On a wired connection through the BT Hub, can't complain about this. WiFi is a different story though.
