BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I know it's completely anecdotal but amongst our user base of 500+ who are WFH currently, there is definitely a correlation of packet loss and high latency to people using VM connections.

I can throw myself into that mix as well, currenly having an absolute nightmare with VM and latency. It was seemingly fixed for a day, then fell flat on its face almost immediately after, and has been since I moved into my new house in mid September.

Can also confirm their CS is trash. The only time I got to speak to someone with any sense of intelligence was when I went down the "thinking of leaving" route :(

I wanted to switch up and go with Zen but they can only offer me ~80mbps due to capacity in the box. BT on the other hand are offering 250mbps, but not sure if it's worth the risk to go with BT, only to have them basically give me the same issues that I had with Virgin, and no way out of the contract because it'll be issues with latency and not speed.

My problem is BT have no intention of offering FTTP or anything above the 80mb max to my area so I’m stuck with a slowly degrading line or giving virgin a try

I 'only' get 60 Mbps, even if I could choose Virgin Media, I wouldn't. I had them at my last house which is about a mile away and I found them terrible. I work from home and game, their connection doesn't work well with either. All they care about is headline speeds and locking people into a contract. I could run 150 Mbps speedtest all day, yet games would rubber band and YouTube struggled to get anywhere near HD.

Yet my brother has had virgin for years, is an avid online gamer and swears by them, he tried bt a few years ago and paid to leave his contract to go back to virgin

They're fine if you're in an area which is not over subscribed, but they still have woeful customer service.

Oh it's certainly worth a try, and essentially the same route I'm taking with BT/Zen. What I currently have is an unstable mess, so I figure as I have the connection already at the house I'll give it a go. Worst case scenario it doesn't work, and I sack it off. Being at home all the time, the 14 days is more than enough to work out the kind of stability I'm likely to get, before I give Virgin their 30 days notice.

I'd prefer not to leave as well, even during peak times, the speed is there almost entirely, it's just the latency. I'm already super average at gaming as it is without my connection making it worse :D

Worth checking out the VM forums to see if many are complaining about congestion in your area. I'm lucky that VM is good where I live as I'm far enough from the cabinet that I would only get 35Mb and Openreach don't have any G.fast or FTTP plans for my area.

Getting utterly fed up with the lack of any progress info on FTTP. My area is in progress and has been for a year but I've literally no way of knowing even a vague timeframe for availability. I don't mind if it's a way off, I just want to know so I can decide whether to renew my contract elsewhere in the interim.

No poles or overhead cables here to inspect and nothing on one.network. The BT website has even stopped saying it's "coming to your area soon" which doesn't bode well.

That's the website I was on about.

My overall area has been "in progress" for over a year. Putting in my postcode just says "Superfast is available" when it used to also say FTTP was coming to my area soon. The fact it doesn't say that any more suggests they know people are getting fed up with the interminable wait.

EDIT: Sorry my mistake, it does actually say "We're starting to build our ultra-fast, ultra-reliable Full Fibre broadband in your area". Still totally vague though.

Keep an eye on that website, in theory you can get Openreach to email you progress updates but I registered in September last year and didn't get a single email from them - I had FTTP installed in June.

They are rubbish with releasing information. My friend works on the fibre team and he's said my area is planned for FTTP, he doesn't know more than that. Yet there is nothing on the public websites.

Yeah I registered ages ago but not a single update.

The area I'm in is huge (Solihull) so will obviously take a while to do, I'd just like to know some sort of timescale as I'm now out of contract with VM and want to know whether to commit to another minimum term.

Same here. Registered for information and not heard a peep.

Look outside at pole and they've obviously started on it, cable all rolled up, hanging half way down the pole and the new junction box is fitted.

They've not touched it since though ☹️

Big problems with copper based ADSL in London since yesterday! Keeps going down then takes ages to come back (I heard someone from BT support mention Openreach did a network upgrade which went wrong!). Surprised it has not made the mainstream media yet as its affecting so many people!

If it was ADSL then it has very little to do with Openreach. I've not seen any issues on the DSL services we have in London.

Check if you can order it - I'm in Solihull and at the end of October I still had no FTTP option.

Yesterday I saw a BT guy working on the manhole cover on the road so I checked again - and saw all the FTTP options were available. Ordered the 900Mb and its being installed 4th December.

Don't wait for an email telling you its now available - I've not had one.
