I don't see any problem with those numbers at all, if you want a gigabit then you need to cable it up.

Your right guys,

I just used a 25m Ethernet cable to hook up directly to my Router downstairs and I am now getting 850mbps.

Is there anything I can do to get my full speeds apart from running a cable?

Put it this way my Netgear A7000 AC1900 USB adapter gets me up to 280mbit/s in my flat, my iPad & iPhone get about 500 to 600 mbit/s close to the router and I’ve heard only the latest Samsung Mobiles can get 900 mbit/s.

I currently have a gigabit connection.

I don’t believe they’re any on the market which will give a full gigabit connection.

The easiest way to run a cable is normally to put it through the wall and up the outside of the house. Either up in to the loft and back down a stud wall or back in through the upstairs wall.

Not possible mate, im in a council property and in block-of-4 arrangment.

Think I will have to hardwire, I just did fast.com again and got 940meg DL. :eek:

Half that for wireless is a no go, I need to change for double the speed! Different if I was losing out on like 50-100, but no, its 50% more

I’m in a similar position I just run a 10M CAT 6 cable from my main PC to the router in the lounge across the floor and around the skirting boards. Might not look pretty but there’s no way I’m going to use WiFi.

It never crossed my mind till now mate..the best way to save time, and make it look sooo much better and professional is to use cable trunking. Thats what im going to do i think.

Before I commit and buy the trunking, will a Cat5e cable be enough for gigabit ethernet? Or do I go 6 / 7?

Cat5e is fine for Gigabit. Use Cat6 if you'd prefer. Don't bother with anything beyond that.

I would need to buy a Cat6 cable, whereas I have a 5e to hand.

Yeah I only bought a 10M CAT 6 cable because there was very little difference in price between that and CAT 5e. I paid £ 2.94 inc delivery for my CAT 6 cable.

CAT 6 is rated for 10 gigabit at up to 55M so I’m a bit future proofed as well.

If the cable is only 10m long 10GBe wouldn't be a problem for Cat5e either.

Yeah a bit like the fact that a CAT 5 cable will run a gigabit over the shorter distances. I have a 20M CAT 5 and it ran my gigabit connection at full speed, it’s only rated for 100 mbit/s over 100M.

Only replaced it as I wanted a shorter cable and it was cheap.

A lot of Cat5 was just as good as the Cat5e that came out later. I've had prewired buildings where the Cat5 handled Gigabit at quite significant distances.

Thats what I need, 20m, so I wont notice any dropping at 20m on Cat5e then?

No you won’t it’s actually rated to run at a gigabit over 100M although you can take that with a pinch of salt as even a CAT 5 would suffice over 20M.
