BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

My in-laws have just moved into a new build estate so were asking for some re: getting broadband sorted - and it really does show the benefit of competition.

We've finally got FTTP by us - but it's only with OpenReach so the prices we have available are all loosely around the same sort of figure. They've got OpenReach, Hyperoptic and VM all available - so the prices are just incredibly low in comparison as they're fighting to get the customers there.

Hyperoptic offering 300mb for 14 quid a month, Zen offering 500mb for 22 quid a month etc. - whereas for us we're looking at around 30-35 quid for 500mb regardless of provider.

Have a weeee look at plusnet. Might have a cheapER option if you're not after a full gig. It's another in BT stable but... options.

We're in a bit of an annoying situation where we've got 2 existing lines to the house - one with Plusnet and the other with Vodafone - but the Plusnet line contract 'ends' next month.

So from a purely financial side I'm just going to upgrade our Vodafone line to full fibre as that has another 14 months or so on the contract. Plusnet have been great, genuinely one of the best broadband providers I've ever used - but it's just a timing/contract thing otherwise I would 100% stick with Plusnet rather than Vodafone from a purely customer service side.

Costs are almost identical, 500mb for 32 quid with either Vodafone or Plusnet.

My BT contract is coming to an end on 19th September. Paying £41.59 a month for 500 down at the moment.

Called BT earlier today to "leave", as I found better deals elsewhere. I also mentioned BT's new customer prices are much lower than what I'm being offered as an existing customer.

All they could offer was £39.99 a month for 500 down, so £2 less. They said I'm not a new customer, so can't offer new customer prices.

How persistent do I have to be with this lot?

Why would you beg someone to take your money? Just go to one of the numerous other OpenReach-based providers instead.

You're already being too persistent I'd say. They've already told you that they punish loyalty so it's time to move away. I live in the vain hope that that more people that stick two fingers up in this situation the more change there is that the industry will start to become less toxic.
Who do you recommend for a decent service? I've been pretty happy with BT regarding service, so which of the providers out there are decent? Maybe one that doesn't do these mid contract price rises too.

I've been using Plusnet for a good while and have found very little to complain about. I've also used TalkTalk, and whilst their customer service is possibly the worst I've ever experienced, the broadband service worked very well.

EE were good, no issues with the service. They're the same as BT though (and owned by them of course, as are Plusnet) in that they'll give new customers a good deal which won't be available to existing customers. I've recently from them to Aquiss. I can't comment on support as I haven't had any issues.

Am I considered a new customer if I switched to EE or not, as they're owned by BT?

How come you moved to Aquiss?

Check our ISPReview and Thinkbroadband if you want to get a good idea on reviews/ratings for various ISPs.

You would want to consider what price you're prepared to pay and package you'll be happy with (this is assuming you've got access to full fibre / FTTP and other network providers).

I've used BT retail long ago in the past (so my experiences are well out of date) and I would say that I had no issues with them. In my opinion, the larger more mainstream ISPs were more rigid for customer support (having to use their own equipment or scripted support would struggle if you had your own equipment installed) versus the smaller providers that are more well versed in dealing with customers that are more likely to be using there own equipment.

I switched to Aquiss last year from no one Internet (formerly Trunk Networks) and used the OneTouch Switch service (basically just ordered the new service and everything is done by them) and 'No-One' called me the next day to check that this was raised by myself and enquire as to my reason for leaving (was mainly based on the transition of Residential support moving to Home Telecom without any notification though technically it didn't apply to my Openreach supplied service).

What things made Aquiss attractive to you?

No idea, they should be able to tell you easy enough.

How come you moved to Aquiss?

Because EE wanted to screw me over at renewal whilst giving great deals to new customers. They're also not able (apparently) to see the 1.6Gbps FTTP product to existing customers.

Smaller more personal company versus the giants of others. They are a bit more expensive but the support (only had a couple of things I needed to contact them for) were excellent It was a similar reason for me to go with No-One/Trunk Networks before.

Swapping from BT to EE would be a new customer account. They are two different ISPs regardless of who owns what. It would be the same for BT to PlusNet or vice versa.

If BT don't wish to move on the price, then as long as you're happy with the other ISP/s you're considering, you should be able to just order your new service though the other ISP (if you're moving from an Openreach to Openreach service then the One Touch process should apply, otherwise moving from an Openreach service to say Virgin Media or Netomnia/Trooli or other alt-net supplier will be different).

Aquiss seems to not do mid contract price rises, which is great.

This 6 months offer with them does seem nice, but once that is over, it becomes pricey.

Hmmmm
